SCHUMER: SECURITY AT PORT OF HONG KONG BETTER THAN IN UNITED STATES Schumer Testifies At Homeland Security Investigations Subcommittee On Security Measures At Port of Hong Kong Schumer Recently Toured Port, Met with Head of Hutchison Ports U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today testified at the Permanent
Subcommittee on Investigations of the Homeland Security and Government
Affairs regarding security measures at the Port of Hong Kong. “It’s a shame that the security at Hong Kong ports is better than anything I’ve seen in the United States. While the Port of Hong Kong is screening everything, we are screening next to nothing. The silver lining to the Dubai Ports World fiasco is that we are finally focused on the vulnerability of our ports and the need for broader, tougher, security measures at our ports. The book was not closed on port security when Dubai Ports World ended its deal – it just concluded one small chapter. Now it’s time to tackle the rest.” “We need to be as aggressive as Hong Kong and focus on screening
every single container and better targeting high risk cargo for thorough
inspection. We shouldn’t be rifling through bananas, when we should
be hunting nuclear weapons. This system does just that. And it makes sense
to me that we have legislation accomplishing this in the United States
and around the world.” |
