Metanoplus biviffatus (Say), TWO-STRIPED GRASSHOP- PER. Size: 26-45 mm. General Distribution: Canada to Mexico, except Florida. Distribution in New Mexico: Statewide. Habitat: Grassland, mountains, riparian; mostly in weedy areas. Host: Various forbs, grasses, and crops, including com, potatoes, onions, cabbage and beets; also trm and shrubs. Adults Present: August-October. Notes: Easily identified by the brown to green body with a conspicuous stripe on each side, the black streak on the hind femur, and the boot-shaped male cercl. Distribution in New Mexico: Bemalillo, Colfax, Dofia Ana, Lincoln, McKinley, Otero, Rio Axriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe. Habitat: Mountains. Host: Grasses. Adults Present: Unknown. Notes: Separated by male cercl. Not economically important. Reference: Helfer 1953. Melanoplus borea& Fleber, NORTHERN SPUR-THROAT. Size: 17-28 mm. General Distribution: Alaska to Labrador, Canada; S. to Califor- nia, New Mexico, Missouri, and Pennsylvania. Distribution in New Mexico: Rio Ardba, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Taos (no map). Habitat: Mountains. Host: Range plants and crops. Adults Present: Unknown. Notes: Male cerci broader at base than at tip; furculae large; tegniina longer than or shorter than abdomen; hind tibiae red, yellowish or pale brown. Can be destructive. Reference: Helfer 1953. Notes: Similar to M. f7avidus, but can be distinguished by paler color and structure of aedeagus; male cerci broad at base
