ARTIST STATEMENT/BIO: Judith Shea's earliest works were simple forms made of pliant fabric that hung on the wall. Later, she began casting fabric in metal in order to achieve greater strength and rigidity. In the mid-1980s, Shea began juxtaposing figures with forms and then pairing figures to give her work added psychological complexity. Judith Shea was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1948, and currently lives and works in New York. Her early training was as a clothing designer; she received a degree in Fashion Design from the Parsons School of Design, New York, in 1969. In 1975 she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Parsons School of Design's New School. Shea's sculpture has been exhibited in major museums such as the The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both in New York; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota; the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. She has been the recipient of The Rome Prize, awarded by the American Academy in Rome, Italy; The Saint-Gaudens Fellowship, awarded by the U.S. Department of Interior's National Park Service; the Rockefeller Foundation Residency at Bellagio, Italy; and two National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artists Fellowships in sculpture.
