Mesocyclone Rapid Update - OB2 Requirement Originally the mesocyclone product was generated following completion of a volume scan of the WSR-88D radar. This new product will now be generated after each elevation is scanned; the existing mesocyclone product will also continue. Under current scan strategies the maximum would be 14 elevations in 5 minutes. The product will differ from the existing mesocyclone product in that it will be sent in a different format and there will be additional attributes associated with the identified mesocyclones. Also there will be a product for each tilt of the volume scan. Attributes include: associated storm id feature type max tangential shear height of max shear top height of mesocyclone azimuth of base range of base height of base azimuth diameter range diameter The product is annotated with product name, date and time of volume scan, and elevation angle. Transmission format - Format of the data is detailed in the ICD. Data Acquisition This product may be received via the RPS list or one time request. Entries for this new product must be added to the RPS list editor, One Time Request, and Radar Multiple Request applications. Elevation angle will be a parameter that must be specified for the MRU. Display requirements Two menu entries for MRU will be needed. One will overlay the highest tilt available and automatically update the display as more recent tilts arrive. A graphic overlay is generated from the data received. The latest (highest) tilt is overlaid when MRU is loaded. As new updates arrive (higher tilts from the same volume scan), the graphic is updated on the display with the newly arrived information. A second menu entry will allow the user to display the MRU for a particular elevation angle. This will update when the same tilt becomes available during the next volume scan. The graphics will differentiate between current and extrapolated mesocyclone features, using special symbols to display these features. These products should be displayable on the normal scales used for individual WSR-88D radar products. The graphic overlay is annotated with elevation angle, product name, and date and time of the volume scan. The alphanumeric table is also displayed with the graphic overlay on the graphic screen. The contents of the table are similar to the existing table with a few new additions. ASCII character "^" is used to indicate updated values. The text portion of the product is stored in the text database and can be displayed on the text workstation. Storage and Purging Storage should be similar to the existing mesocyclone product. This is a new product, and the old product will still be available. Sufficient versions will be stored to allow overlay with other volume scan products such as reflectivity and velocity. Since there is a product for each tilt, there can be as many as 14 times the current number of versions. The text portion of the product is stored in the text database.
