The reason for using a parish to derive a counties boundary map was due the fact that existing counties' boundary map is very generalized. The following steps were followed: In ArcView, a mask (with same geographic extents as QENP and surrounding areas) was used to extract all the counties (or portions of counties) from a national counties map. The extracted counties map was exported to TNTmips 6.0. In TNTmips, the counties map was displayed as a reference and the parish map (qenp_parishes.shp) editable. Only parish boundaries that coincided with counties' boundaries were maintained and the rest deleted. The resultant counties map was exported back to ArcView. This coding is similar to the Population Database (*.dbf files) as archived at Population and Census Department, Entebbe, Uganda. It is therefore easy to integrate the Population database with qenp_parishes.shp. The only requirement is that the population database must be aggregated since the smallest unit is a village. The process of creating one file from the 17 map sheets was as follows: The 17 sheets were Merged in ArcView 3.1 to create one file Since some parish polygons were located on more than one map sheet, Dissolve polygon command was used to remove unnecessary lines dividing individual polygons. Dissolve polygon was also necessary because very large polygons were arbitrarily subdivided to accommodate PC Arc/Info's limitation on the size of a polygon. It was found out that after using Dissolve polygon command, not all the unnecessary lines were removed. This was particularly so with the edge lines of the map sheets. These unnecessary lines were edited and deleted in TNTmips 6.0. This process involved exporting the merged and dissolved parish file to TNTmips, editing and then exporting the file back to ArcView 3.1. TNTmips 6.0 was also used to delete the unnecessary parishes (to maintain one parish deep from the QENP boundary. Where the parishes were very small, two parishes from the park boundary were maintained. Since a polygon of the protected area type could be located on more than one map sheet, Union Features) command of ArcView was used to dissolve the unnecessary lines and hence create one polygon. The same command also combines the attributes from several polygons. The Union Feature command was also used to remove arbitrarily lines that divide very large polygons in NBS map layers The Protected area boundary map (National Park and Wildlife Reserves) was exported to ArcView 3.1 Name of person responsible for the data set preparation: Sam Mugisha (at MUIENR) Members informations: Attached Vector(s): MemberID: 12 Vector Name: Rivers (big) Source Map Name: Topographic maps series Y732: Source Map Scale: 1:50,000 Source Map Date: 1960s Projection: UTM (Zone 36, South of the equator) Projection_meas: Meters Feature_type: Lines Legend_file: qenp_riversbig.avl Vector Summary: Name of map layer: Rivers (big) in and around Queen Elisabeth National Park Disk:MRU Server File name: qenp_riversbig.shp X min (UTM coordinates):124218 X max:221721 Y min:9910247 Y max:10031432 Location : Queen Elisabeth National Park (QENP)/Kigezi and Kyambura Wildlife Reserves Keyword : Riversbig Projection: UTM (Zone 36, South of the equator) Datum: New (1960) Arc Map units: Meters Scale: 1:50,000 Feature type : Lines Feature count: Attribute field name : Lsubj Attribute Definition : River code (big): 3211 Name : Names of the rivers Definition source : NBS Domain : Integer (river code); Text (river name) Range : Accuracy : Look up table filename : Source name : Topographic maps series Y732: z652riv; z654; z661riv; z662riv; z663riv; z664riv; z751riv; z752riv; z753riv; z761riv; z762riv; z763riv; z841riv; z842riv; z843riv; z844riv; and z851riv; Source originator : Department of Lands and Surveys, Entebbe, Uganda Source publisher: Department of Lands and Surveys, Entebbe, Uganda & digitized by NBS Source scale: 1:50,000 Source date: 1960's Source type : Digital Source Accuracy : Software and operating system used for producing the data: ArcView 3.1 running on windows NT 4.0 Process description of how the data was derived from the source including information on topology and other quality aspects : QENP and surrounding areas are composed of 17 topographic base maps (scale: 1:50,000).
