Washington – Several hundred U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents and officers will be deployed across the Washington, D.C., metro area to assist in securing events surrounding the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, as well as participating in the Inaugural Parade. Beginning January 17, CBP will provide Border Patrol agents and Field Operations officers, Air & Marine assets and personnel, and K-9 teams to augment the efforts of the U.S. Secret Service and other public safety agencies.

“I am proud to announce that CBP will be supporting the 2009 Presidential Inauguration. I want to applaud all our personnel who will represent CBP and assist in security during this historic event,” CBP Commissioner W. Ralph Basham said. “I am also very pleased to have CBP well represented in the Presidential Inaugural parade by the likes of our Noble Mustangs and award-winning Border Patrol Honor Guard.”

CBP Air & Marine will provide air support in and around the Washington D.C., area on January 17. Many CBP law enforcement officers have volunteered to help provide security during pre-inaugural events at the Lincoln Memorial on January 18.

On Inauguration Day itself, CBP personnel will provide perimeter security while the presidential party is in transit. During the Inaugural Parade, CBP personnel will provide security on the National Mall perimeter, as well as help to secure other locations, while several CBP K-9 teams will patrol the parade route itself. CBP Air & Marine will provide a variety of security services on Inauguration Day, including aircraft and boats. CBP Air & Marine is supporting U.S. Coast Guard, ICE, Secret Service, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Operations staff.

In addition, CBP agents and officers will be screening visitors to the U.S. Capitol as well as providing coordination and logistical support to the overall security effort that day.

CBP is also committed to providing backup officers for the U.S. Capitol Police, force protection for FEMA and will have additional aircraft and crews on standby for ready deployment if needed.

The parade contingent includes the Border Patrol’s award winning Honor Guard from the El Paso sector along with a Bagpipes and Drums section, a marching platoon, the Spokane Sector’s unique Noble Mustangs and a motor unit comprised of two 2009 Harley Davidson Road King Police Edition motorcycles.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
