From: Peter Freund [peterfreund@altavista.com] Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2001 11:06 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket 00N-1396 Dear Sirs: It is the responsibility of the FDA to establish mandatory pre-market safety testing of genetically engineered products. The health impact of these products, including short and long term effects such as potential toxicity, allergic responses, lower or compromised nutritional value, and genetic changes in the consumers of these products must be thoroughly studies before the products are allowed on the market. Genetic engineering, in which genes from species that would not ordinarily interbreed are crudely inserted at random into the delicately woven fabric of DNA of a species, should not be assumed to be safe--it is not at all the same dynamic of transformation of plant species as occurs in selective breeding programs. Therefore systematic short and long terms testing and evaluation of all impacts must be required for every new introduced product.
