From: Satchell, Felicia B Sent: Monday, July 15, 2002 1:20 PM To: Nalubola, Ritu; Thompson, Susan Subject: FW: FAAN Product-Related Member Calls, July 1-12, 2002 -----Original Message----- From: The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network [mailto:faan@foodallergy.org] Sent: Monday, July 15, 2002 1:07 PM To: Satchell, Felicia B Subject: FAAN Product-Related Member Calls, July 1-12, 2002 As always, everyone who calls FAAN about a product is instructed to call the manufacturer if they haven't already done so. Wishbone Russian Dressing - (privacy) called to tell us she purchased this dressing for her milk-allergic child. There are no milk ingredients listed, but it does list "natural flavor." She called the manufacturer and was told the natural flavor contains dairy. Chatfields Dairy Free Chocolate Chips - this e-mail is from (privacy): Today, my milk allergic son reacted to Chatfields Dairy Free Chocolate Chips, by American Natural Snacks, sold at Whole Foods. The label does not list any milk derivate or proteins. Nabisco Ritz Crackers - this e-mail is from (privacy) about a frequently-reported problem. In the past, it has been determined that what appears to be peanut butter is actually an accumulation of shortening and flour from the pans. Recently I bought Ritz crackers - plain - read the label to make sure they were ok for my daughter to eat and when I opened them up in 1 of the 4 packages of crackers there was peanut butter around some of the edges on the crackers. I am so lucky that it was me that opened them up and not her. Nabisco Barnum Animal Crackers - (privacy) called to tell us her peanut-allergic daughter had a reaction. She ate 2 crackers and broke out in hives. Two hours later she had trouble breathing and was taken by ambulance to the emergency room. She called the manufacturer and was told there are no peanut ingredients in the product. McCormick Produce Partners - (privacy) called to tell us her 13-year-old daughter, who is allergic to egg and peanut, had a reaction. This is a batter mix that is used to make onion rings and other fried vegetables. No egg or peanut ingredients are listed. The daughter ate one bite and said right away, "Oh no, there's egg in here." Her mouth became blistered and she became nauseated. They threw away the rest of the product. Edy's Whole Fruit Sorbet - (privacy) called to tell us about 2 reactions his (privacy) had. (privacy) is 14 years old and is allergic to milk. On July 7 (privacy) ate 1 scoop of Mandarin Orange sorbet and 15 minutes later felt nauseous. Shortly thereafter (privacy) felt like (privacy) chest was heavy, (privacy) vomited, (privacy) ears were red, (privacy) throat started to close, and (privacy) had breathing difficulty. EpiPen and Atarax were administered and paramedics were called. They started an IV, gave (privacy) oxygen, and transported (privacy) to the hospital. (privacy) did not give me the details of the reaction, but said that on May 31 (privacy) reacted to the Lemon flavor of the same sorbet. However, at the time, they suspected that the reaction had been caused because someone who had eaten cheese might have stuck a finger into the sorbet. They called Edy's after the latest reaction and were told that the sorbet is made on the same equipment as ice cream. They don't have any of the lemon sorbet left, but they do have the rest of the mandarin orange sorbet from the container that caused the latest reaction. Tofutti Chocolate Supreme Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert - (privacy) called to tell us her milk-allergic (privacy) had a mild reaction several weeks ago. About 30 minutes after eating this product (privacy) complained that his throat was hurting and she treated him with Benadryl. She had the product tested at the University of Nebraska lab and they determined that it contained 10 parts per million of milk protein. Pepperidge Farm Nantucket Chocolate Chunk Minis - we received another report of the discrepancy in labeling on the multi-pack from (privacy). There is no warning on the outer packaging, but the individual packs inside have a warning that they may contain peanuts and nuts. _______________________________________ Debbie Scherrer, Member Communications The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network 10400 Eaton Place, Suite 107 Fairfax, VA 22030 1-800-929-4040 Phone: 703-691-3179 Fax: 703-691-2713 http://www.foodallergy.org/ _______________________________________
