Description/Abstract Ozone damage often occurs in summer, less frequently in spring and fall, to the ozone-sensitive tobacco variety Bel-W3 grown in conventionally ventilated greenhouses at Beltsville, Md.^In greenhouses at Beltsville cooled by air moving through moist pads, many tobacco varieties and species are affected and the ozone-type injury is more severe than in the manually ventilated greenhouses.^Pollution damage is insignificant during the winter when ventilators usually are closed.^The purpose of this study was to investigate with a charcoal filter the relation of air pollution to ozone fleck and premature leaf senescence in the eastern USA.^Results indicated that neither ozone fleck nor premature leaf senescence developed on tobacco leaves in air passed through activated charcoal.^In contrast, plants grown in ambient air displayed ozone flecking and premature leaf senescence.
