Hi-res version

By Maj. Larry Gunnell

Squadron Commander

Rio del Fierro Composite Squadron

Texas Wing

TEXAS -- Rio del Fierro Composite Squadron Chaplain Lt. Col. William L. Jackson has been named the Texas Wing Thomas C. Casady Unit Chaplain of the Year.

Colonel Jackson has served as chaplain for the squadron since 1998 and has performed meritoriously in this capacity. He holds several titles within the squadron: chaplain, mentor, counselor, pilot and mission crew. He is currently qualified as mission chaplain and mission observer who rarely passes up the opportunity to go on missions, no matter what the circumstance.

The chaplain has been very active in the Cadet Moral Leadership Program and has continuously kept cadets interested and focused on current issues concerning the youth of today. He remains active in the cadet program and his work with cadets is nothing short of ideal.

Chaplain Jackson has been a "moral leader" for senior members, offering his assistance, counseling and spiritual support in the wake of the tragedy of September 11, an event that greatly affected all Americans and changed the purpose of the Civil Air Patrol forever.

Chaplain Jackson volunteers his time and experience willingly, and renders the invocation at all squadron events, meetings and activities. He has coordinated "CAP Sunday" on the first Sunday of December, consecutively for the years of 2000 - 2002, and encourages participation by cadet and senior members alike. This enormous representation of loyalty, patriotism, and honor granted to CAP and the chaplaincy is above reproach and is commendable to the meaning and significance of Civil Air Patrol's anniversary. This has been accomplished with the participation and acceptance of his congregation at Victory Baptist Church who make this an annual event. .

Without Chaplain Jackson's zeal, the Rio del Fierro squadron would not be the same today.  He has participated in many of CAP's primary missions, with exceptional service done in particular areas. He continues to serve proudly and professionally, and is encouraged to expand his knowledge of the chaplaincy to include attending the Region Chaplain Staff College as a staff chaplain / presenter or support staff.

Even though this citation is for Chaplain Jackson’s most recent service, it is a reflection of his years of active CAP duty, and is a vote of faith in his abilities to be a "spiritual leader" in his CAP profession. His dedication to the Civil Air Patrol is greatly appreciated by the community and reflects his meritorious service to Rio del Fierro Composite Squadron.

Chaplain Jackson was nominated for this award by squadron commander Maj. Larry Gunell.
