U.S. Marshals Capture Suspected “Bank Whisperer”

Phoenix, AZ – Late last night Deputy U.S. Marshals arrested Ryan Garcia, 34, in the area of 21st Ave and Van Buren in Phoenix after a six hour stand-off with Police.

Garcia was wanted by the U.S. Marshals for violating the conditions of his Supervised Release, after serving time in Federal prison for drug-related offenses, and is wanted for questioning regarding the bank robberies committed by the so-called Bank Whisperer, suspected of robbing numerous banks across the valley over the past month.

Late yesterday afternoon Deputy U.S. Marshals and Task Force Officers located Garcia at a motel in the area of 21st Ave and Van Buren. As Officers attempted to arrest Garcia he barricaded himself and a female associate inside a motel room. The Phoenix Police Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety Special Operations Unit responded to assist. DPS helped establish negotiations with Garcia and after approximately six hours Garcia and his female associate surrendered peacefully to Officers.

United States Marshal David Gonzales praised the work of Deputies and law enforcement officers adding, “Every effort was made by the Marshals Service to capture this fugitive quickly to prevent him from committing more bank robberies across the valley. The assistance of the Phoenix Police Department and the DPS Special Operations Unit was critical and as a direct result led to a peaceful resolution.”

The full-time federal, state, and local agencies that comprise the Arizona WANTED include: U.S. Marshals Service; Immigration and Customs Enforcement; Arizona Department of Public Safety; Maricopa County Adult Probation Office; Mesa Police Department; Surprise Police Department; Phoenix Police Department; El Mirage Police Department and several part-time state and local law enforcement agencies.

This case has been referred to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. An individual is presumed innocent until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The U.S. Marshals Service is the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency. Annually, U.S. Marshals arrest more than 50 percent of all federal fugitives and serve more federal warrants than all other federal agencies combined.
