overing
the entire second floor and extending over the Portico,
the attic was perhaps originally intended to be a ballroom, but
was used primarily for storage while the Custises and Lees lived
at Arlington. The family often referred to the attic as the garrett.
During the Civil War some Union soldiers used this area of the house
as sleeping quarters. While some soldiers took souvineers from the
mansion, others left something behind: grafitti on the attic wall.
Several signatures with dates from the occupation period are still
visible today. Military records suggest that at least one of these
signatures is authentic, belonging to a Union soldier stationed
at Arlington during the War.
