Mark: Welcome to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Podcast for February 23rd, 2007. I’m Mark Ross.

Arlene: And I’m Arlene Flecha. This week, CPSC announced two recalls of children’s jewelry that contain high levels of lead. We also announced the recall of about 10,000 remote controls sold with DVD players at Best Buy stores, and a recall of about 2,000 Sake Warmers, both of which pose burn hazards to consumers.

Mark: First off this week, about 115,000 Children’s Rings Sold at Big Lots! Stores are being recalled by Lari Jewelry, and about 6,000 necklace and earring sets sold at Kmart stores are being recalled by Crimzon Rose Accesssories.

Arlene: The recalled jewelry contains high levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. No incidents or injuries have been reported with this jewelry.

Mark: The recalled rings sold at Big Lots are silver colored with red paint and a simulated diamond cluster on the top. The ring’s packaging is a yellow card with “Claudia Jublot” printed on the front.

Arlene: The children’s necklace and earring sets from Kmart have birthstones made of plastic gemstones in various colors. The pendants on the necklaces are shaped like flowers on a silver-colored chain. The matching pierced earrings have round birthstones.

Mark: Take the recalled jewelry away from children immediately and return it to the store where purchased. Consumers returning the rings will receive a full refund.

Arlene: Consumers returning their recalled jewelry to Kmart will receive one of three free children jewelry sets. For more information on the ring recall, call Lari Jewelry Co. toll-free at 866-524-0024. For information on the jewelry sets sold at Kmart, call (800) 659-7026.

Mark: Also this week, Best Buy Co. Inc. Recalled about 10,000 Remote Controls Used with Insignia DVD Players. If the batteries are placed backwards in the remote control with the positive and negative sides improperly switched, overheating can result and present a burn hazard.

Arlene: Best Buy has received one report of a remote control overheating. No injuries have been reported. The white remote control has model number NS-A1113 and “Insignia” printed on the front.

Mark: For additional information, contact Best Buy toll-free at (888) 809-7022 anytime or visit the firm’s Web site at www.BestBuy.com.

Arlene: Finally this week, Tap Machine Inc. recalled about 2,000 Sake Warmers because they can unexpectedly spray hot sake on consumers during use, posing a risk of serious burns.

Mark: Tap Machine has received one report of a consumer sustaining first and second degree burns when using the sake warmer. The recalled product is used to warm sake at restaurants, bars or for home use. The recalled units have model number SM05 followed by serial numbers: 1001 through 3074.

Arlene: Consumers should immediately stop using these sake warmers and return them to Tap Machine for a full refund. Contact Tap Machine Inc. at (888) 556-0703 or visit the company’s Web site at www.sakewarmer.com
