Description/Abstract | Giving up the empire removes important obstacles to Russia`s becoming a democratic and prosporous state.^Unfortunately, though, history rarely offers free lunches.^Russia has become so tied to the empire that its loss is bound to create profound psychological, political, economic, and military problems.^How these difficulties are managed will determine whether Russia will exploit the unique opportunities presented by the demise of the USSR or, unable to cope with its painful circumstances, will again resort to authoritarianism and perhaps even to the partial rebuilding of its empire. |
