Masturbation is a bona fide safe sex practice in the era of HIV/AIDS. Researches indicate, however, that some chose choose to have unprotected sexual intercourse rather than masturbate because of guilt over masturbation. Moreover, masturbatory guilt had been implicated in the aversion to manipulating birth control devices like condoms and aversion to manipulating one's own and other's genitals (e.g., mutual masturbation). This research aims to investigate the predictors of masturbatory guilt. The study investigated the prevalence of masturbation among 912 educated male and female Filipino adolescents and young adults from 5 different universities. This study also reported the significant group differences between masturbators and nonmasturbators based on the variables gender, sexual orientation, religiosity, authoritarianism, age, and sexual experience; no significant differences were found based on the variables sibling position, and number of siblings in the family. Moreover, using step-wise multiple regression, the study identified the variables religiosity, authoritarianism, frequency of masturbation, age, sibling position, and sexual experience as significant predictors of masturbatory guilt. This research utilized an anonymous questionnaire that incorporated the Revised Attitude Towards Masturbation Scale and Right-Wing Authoritarianism Scale. Results: showed that the prevalence of masturbation among the educated Filipino adolescents and young adults is similar to their western counterparts. The findings also highlighted the role of sociosexual scripts in masturbatory practice or non-practice and masturbatory guilt. Theoretical and clinical implications of findings propose a therapeutic perspective in alleviating masturbatory guilt that could hinder practice of safe or safer sex.
