Abstract: | The relationship between students' family background (blue-collar versus nonblue-collar) and authoritarianism, as measured by the California F-Scale, was studied. In addition, strategies that might be used to assist faculty in teaching students with authoritarian tendencies are suggested. The sample consisted of 222 students attending a two-year branch campus of the Pennsylvania State University. It was found that students from blue-collar backgrounds scored significantly higher on authoritarianism, which includes the variables of submission, aggression, anti-intraception, power and toughness, and projection. Parental occupational difference was the key socioeconomic variable for predicting significant differences between authoritarian scores. Authoritarianism was higher for blue-collar, male, Catholic, two-year students as compared to non-blue-collar, female, Protestant, Jewish, and four-year students. It is suggested that in order to effectively teach these students, the faculty member should be aware of the personality and cultural reality of the students, especially as it compares to their own cultural reality and personality.
