GLANSIS

 Native to Asia. U.S. Fish Commission first brought them to North America in the late 1800s as a food fish. Tolerant of silty and turbid environments. A large pest, roiling silty substrates while feeding - eat submerged vegetation and benthos. Length:15 to 22 inches U.S. record is 57 lbs. 13 oz.

 Hybridizes with striped shiner. An opportunistic omnivore, which means it eats pretty much whatever it comes across, including both plant and animal items. Diet normally consists of a variety of aquatic insects (both the adults and larvae), filamentous algae, and other higher plant matter. Large common shiners also eat small fish. Length to 30 cm.

Omnivorous sight-feeders. The young eat mostly waterfleas and other small-crustaceans, small insect larvae (like midges) and some algae. The adults include a lot more plant matter and algae along with larger aquatic insects, crayfish, snails, and small fish. Length to 300 mm (12 in). Males are bigger than females.

 Most often in or near beds of emergent and floating plants. Northern redbelly dace hybridize (mate with other species) frequently and sometimes they form all female populations. Planktivores, they primarily eat filamentous algae and diatoms. At times they also eat waterfleas and small insect larvae like midges. Length to 8 cm.

 Finescale dace mostly eat small invertebrates, like aquatic insects and fingernail clams, but they also eat some algae. Young finescales eat tiny waterfleas, copepods and very small aquatic insects. Length to 10 cm. Finescale dace females grow larger and live longer than males.

 Tolerant of variable water conditions, but not of competing species. Noted for their ability to withstand low oxygen levels. Opportunist feeder - they eat just about anything that they come across, such as algae, protozoa (like ameba), plant matter, insects (adults and larvae), rotifers, and copepods. Length to 10 cm, males grow bigger than females.

GLANSIS

PontoCaspian native widely introduced as a baitfish - first Great Lakes record in Lake Ontario in 1989. May hybridize with native golden shiners. Omnivorous, feeds on invertebrates (including insect larvae and adults) and plants. Length to 48cm.

Opportunistic feeders - young begin eating small copepods and waterfleas from the water column, but they soon begin foraging in vegetation for larval insects. As they grow, they add a greater variety of aquatic insect larvae, terrestrial (land) insect, and eventually small fish. Length to 30 cm, males larger than females.
