  • Salary Range: $33,203 - $66,033, Depending on Experience The U.S. District Court Clerk’s Office is seeking applications for an experienced full-time Generalist Clerk to work in the U.S. District Court Clerk’s Office. The Generalist Clerk monitors the progression of cases by maintaining official case records, making summary entries of documents and proceedings on the docket, performing necessary noticing, quality assurance and administrative and clerical tasks. This position is located in the Divisional Office in Worcester, Massachusetts and reports directly to the Division Manager. Representative Duties:
  • Receives and reviews incoming documents to determine conformity with appropriate rules, practices and/or court requirements.
  • Files documents meeting requirements.
  • Collects appropriate fees.
  • Assures assignment of case numbers and randomly assigns cases to judges.
  • Prepares case file.
  • Routes documents to proper offices/persons after acceptance.
  • Acts as receptionist and furnishes information to a wide variety of people within and outside of the court.
  • Makes summary entries of documents not electronically filed on the docket. This includes, but is not limited to, such things as: pleadings, petitions, motions, complaints, and orders.
  • Assists in case management by ensuring that all automated entries are appropriately linked for proper case management.
  • Prepares and transmits to appropriate parties such items as: notices, judgments and orders.
  • Answers inquiries on case status.
  • Opens cases upon receipt of initiating documents, such as complaints, indictments, or petitions.
  • Closes cases upon receipt of terminating documents, such as judgments and closing orders.
  • Receives, opens and sorts juror questionnaires; determines from an examination of returned questionnaires those persons who are qualified as jurors under applicable statutes and local rules.
  • Assists with jury panels for judges on impanelment day.
  • Monitors and records juror attendance.
  • Assists with juror orientation.
  • Responds to public inquiries by telephone and in person, aides all serving jurors with their daily parking validation, certificates and questions.
  • Executes follow-up procedures on persons who fail to respond to questionnaires or jury summonses and takes appropriate action to ensure compliance.
  • Prepares routine correspondence to prospective jurors relative to incomplete questionnaires to those persons failing to return their questionnaires.

  • Broad knowledge of the purpose and content of each document or event to summarize, make docket entries and take the appropriate actions.
  • Good knowledge of applicable procedural rules.
  • Skill in use of the automation systems.
  • Ability to communicate information accurately and in a timely manner from individuals within and outside the judiciary court unit.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or meet the exceptions to the statutory restrictions on hiring non- citizens to work in the federal government in the continental United States. FBI Background Investigation: Applicants considered for this position will undergo a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background investigation defined as a technical fingerprint search of the criminal history records of the FBI national fingerprint database to determine if there is an arrest record on the individual.
