Synthesis of Composite Materials Via Displacement Reactions

Battelle Number(s): 10687-E
Patent(s) Issued
Available for licensing in all fields

Summary

This is a method of producing ceramic-metal composites (cermets) using solid-state displacement reactions in sub micron metal/metal oxide alternating layer structures. Use of sub micron alternating layer structures shortens the required diffusion distances and allows displacement reactions to proceed at relatively low temperatures.

Submicron particles of silicon and molybdenum carbide are reacted to form a noninterwoven particulate composite material that that includes a composite of molybdenum silicide incorporating dispersed particles of silicon carbide.
