Congressman Dent prioritizes funding for important safety, transportation projects in the Fifteenth District

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (PA-15) announced two important projects in the 15th District are funded in the appropriations for the Departments of Transportation, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development, the Judiciary, District of Columbia, and independent agencies for 2007, as passed by the House on Wednesday.

Local projects include:

• $500,000 for safety upgrades to intersection of state Route 100 and state Route 4003 (Kernsville Road), Lowhill Township, Lehigh County. The project calls for an upgrade (turning lanes, signal, reconfigure approaches, etc.) at the existing intersection which has been the sight of recent accidents, including a fatality on Feb. 18.

“Clearly this is an important safety project, and the funding in this bill will help prioritize these needed improvements,” Congressman Dent said.

• $250,000 for the redevelopment of the Third and Snyder streets area in Easton, Northampton County, including studies for a proposed funicular, or inclined railway, that would provide a link downtown Easton and the city’s growing northern and northwestern neighbors who presently use North Third Street to get into the City. Specifically, the incline will better connect Easton’s downtown area and the growing “College Town Center,” which is anchored by Lafayette College.

“This project is something the college has been working on, a way to get people up and down the side of the hill,” Congressman Dent said. “I think a funicular would be a very significant tourist destination as well, helping revitalize downtown Easton.”
The bill now moves on for Senate passage.
