Subject: Fwd: Special AIRS Operations Status Report for March 27, 2007

This is a special edition of the  AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  operations

status report for Tuesday, March 27, 2007.

Orbit Inclination Maneuver # 13, originally scheduled for Wednesday,

March 28 (2007/087) has been cancelled.  Execution of AIRS Stored

Command Sequences #130 and #131 will be inhibited.  As a result no

commands will be issued to the AIRS instrument.

MODIS Lunar Calibration Maneuver #46, originally scheduled for

Thursday, March 29 (2007/088) has been cancelled.  The commands that

temporarily place AIRS in "Ready" mode during the MODIS calibration

activities have been deleted.  However the monthly Guard Test,

normally done in conjunction with the MODIS activity, remains

scheduled and will take place. (See "Upcoming Events", below.)

Otherwise AIRS and AMSU-A remain healthy, with all voltages,

currents, and temperatures as expected (AMSU-A2 temperature readouts

remain noisy).

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For March 30, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Friday, March 30, 2007 (the end of week 256 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS and AMSU-A remain healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected (AMSU-A2 temperature readouts remain noisy).

Both AIRS and AMSU-A continue in routine operations.

Due to a software problem in the ground system, the Aqua Orbital Inclination Adjustment Maneuver (IAM) #13, originally scheduled for this past Wednesday, was canceled. AIRS data taking was not interrupted.

The same software problem forced the cancellation of MODIS Lunar Calibration Roll maneuver #46 on Thursday, March 29. However, the AIRS guard test for that day was not canceled. Here is the detailed timeline (UT):

088/18:54:00 AIRS Guard Test began (AIRS in CHECKOUT mode)

088/19:21:00 AIRS back in OPERATE mode (Guard Test complete)

The IAM's have been rescheduled. See "Upcoming events" for the new dates. Since the lunar calibration maneuver must be done during a specific phase of the moon, it cannot be rescheduled. The next lunar calibration will take place in late April.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For May 4, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Friday, May 4, 2007 (the end of week 261 of the Aqua mission).

Happy Anniversary and congratulations to all the Aqua teams---spacecraft and instrument development, science, data processing, and operations! The Aqua spacecraft, with AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB on board, was launched exactly five years ago today.

AIRS and AMSU-A remain healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected (AMSU-A2 temperature readouts remain noisy).

Both AIRS and AMSU-A continue in routine operations.

MODIS lunar calibration roll maneuver #46 (or maybe #47) and an associated AIRS guard test were successfully performed Friday, April 27. I am uncertain how to number the lunar calibration rolls because of the cancellation of the March 29 maneuver. Two different numbering systems now seem to be in use. Here is last Friday's detailed timeline (UT):

117/08:01:00 AIRS Guard Test began (AIRS in CHECKOUT mode) (duration about 27 minutes)

117/08:30:30 AIRS put into READY mode (Lunar Cal began)

Based on our experiences in 2005 and 2006, we would not have been surprised if another episode of high current excursions near the south pole began in late March or April on the AMSU-A1-2 noisy bus. A small amount of such activity did take place in late April. But the current increases were quite small, and the whole episode seems to have lasted only for two or three days, instead of several months as in prior years. Of course, we will continue to monitor the situation carefully.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For May 18, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report

for Friday, May 18, 2007 (the end of week 263 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS and AMSU-A remain healthy, with all voltages, currents, and

temperatures as expected (AMSU-A2 temperature readouts remain noisy).

Both AIRS and AMSU-A continue in routine operations. There were no

instrument activities this past week.

In last week's report it was stated that AMSU-A1-2 noisy bus current

increases during the south polar winter had started late this year.

It was also noted that the spiking only lasted three days, then

disappeared. After a one week delay, the noisy bus current "spiking"

has reappeared. The amplitude of the increase is still very small. In

general, this year's event not only started late but, so far, appears

to be much weaker than the 2005 and 2006 events. We will continue to

monitor this behavior.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For June 7, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Thursday, June 7, 2007 (almost the end of week 266 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS and AMSU-A remain healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected (AMSU-A2 temperature readouts remain noisy).

Both AIRS and AMSU-A continue in routine operations.

Due to some ground network problems, 16 minutes of AIRS and MODIS data were lost on June 2 (day of year 153). The following range of UT times was lost for AIRS:

02:25:00 to 02:41:26

An AIRS photometric calibration sequence was run today. Here is the detailed timeline (UT):

      158/19:21:00  Photocal Lamp 1 On (S/C day)

158/19:29:00  Photocal Lamps Off (S/C day)

      158/20:10:00  Photocal Lamp 1 On (S/C night)

158/20:18:00  Photocal Lamps Off (S/C night)

      158/21:00:00  Photocal Lamp 3 On (S/C day)

158/21:08:00  Photocal Lamps Off (S/C day)

      158/21:49:00  Photocal Lamp 3 On (S/C night)

158/21:57:00  Photocal Lamps Off (S/C night)

This year's AMSU-A1-2 noisy bus current spiking event continues. Amplitudes of current increases are getting larger, but sporadically, not steadily. The largest current increase seen so far in this episode had about half the amplitude of the largest excursion seen in previous years.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For June 15, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Friday, June 15, 2007 (the end of week 267 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS and AMSU-A remain healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected (AMSU-A2 temperature readouts remain noisy).

Both AIRS and AMSU-A continue in routine operations. There were no instrument activities this past week.

This year's AMSU-A1-2 noisy bus current spiking event continues. Activity peaked (at least for now) on June 6 with the largest amplitude being slightly over 50% of the biggest excursion ever seen (in 2005). This year's episode has been more sporadic than previous years, and the recent decrease in peak current may turn out to be temporary. We will continue to monitor the situation.

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Tuesday, July 3, 2007 (the middle of week 270 of the Aqua mission). This report is being issued early because I will be out the rest of this week.

AIRS and AMSU-A remain healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected (AMSU-A2 temperature readouts remain noisy).

Both AIRS and AMSU-A continue in routine operations. There were no instrument activities this past week.

An AIRS photometric calibration sequence will be performed on Monday, July 9. See "Upcoming events" below.

This year's AMSU-A1-2 noisy bus current spiking event appears to be dying down. However, it is still too early to tell for sure. Hopefully, next week's report will be more definitive.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report (interim) For July 10, 2007---Upcoming DMU Burn

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Tuesday, July 10, 2007 (the middle of week 271 of the Aqua mission). The purpose of this report is to provide the detailed timeline for a drag make up burn scheduled for this coming Thursday, July 12. The timeline for this maneuver was announced over the Fourth of July holiday period, after last week's status report was issued. See "Upcoming events" below.

AIRS and AMSU-A remain healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected (AMSU-A2 temperature readouts remain noisy).

Both AIRS and AMSU-A continue in routine operations. An AIRS photometric calibration sequence was performed on Monday, July 9. Here is the detailed timeline (UT):

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For August 15, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report

for Wednesday, August 15 (during week 275 of the Aqua mission). This

report is being issued one day early this week, because I will be out

of the office tomorrow.

AIRS and AMSU-A remain healthy, with all voltages, currents, and

Subject: Interim AIRS Operations Status Report For October 29, 2007

This is an interim AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  operations status report for Monday, October 29 (during week 286 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS remains healthy with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. AMSU-A is mostly healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected, but see the second paragraph below. Both instruments continue in routine operations.

There were no instrument activities this past week.

In recent weeks the gain on AMSU-A channel 4 has been decreasing and the noise increasing at a noticeable rate. We are studying this issue. Channel 4 is still being used in AIRS retrievals at the GES DISC. But if the noise increase continues at its present rate it could significantly affect the quality of both the radiances and the retrievals. Channel 4 might even have to be declared non-operational some time in the next month or two. More details on this anomaly will be available in future status reports.

The AIRS guard test, originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, has been rescheduled to Friday, November 2 (see "Upcoming events" below). There will be no guard test on October 30. This rescheduling was necessitated by the fact that a spacecraft operational constraint would have been violated by the October 30 test.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For November 2, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Friday, November 2 (the end of week 286 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS remains healthy with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Except for channel 4, AMSU-A is also healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Both instruments continue in routine operations.

There were no instrument activities this past week, but an AIRS guard test is scheduled for later today. See "Upcoming events" below.

The AIRS Project continues to study the impact of the decreased responsivity and increased noise in AMSU-A channel 4. We have sent out two advisories describing the situation, one to the AIRS data users list and one to the direct broadcast users list. JPL ISA (incident-surprise-anomaly) report number Z91778 was issued on October 30. The Earth Sciences Mission Operations Project at Goddard Space Flight Center is also organizing a team to investigate the current and predicted performance of this channel.

Below is an excerpt from the advisory sent by Ed Olsen, of the AIRS Project, to AIRS data users:

The radiometric noise, NeDT, in AMSU channel 4 ( center frequency 52.8 GHz, weighting function peaking at 850 hPa) has recently increased significantly.  At launch it was 0.12 K, and it had slowly risen as the instrument aged to 0.2 K through April of 2007.  Beginning in May, 2007 it began to rise more rapidly and reached a level of 0.4 K in September, 2007.  Beginning in late September, the rate of increase accelerated so that by the end of October the NeDT is near 1 K.

The AMSU channel 4 NeDT has now risen to a level that may adversely affect the accuracy of the MW-only retrieval products in the lower atmosphere.  The AIRS Project is assessing its impact on both the MW-only products and the possible consequences of the loss of this channel on the standard products, which are the result of the combined MW/IR retrieval algorithm.  The Project is also examining strategies to mitigate the impact of the higher NeDT or possible loss of this channel in the future.

Data users are advised to exercise caution in the use of the radiances from AMSU channel 4 at any date after July, 2007.  The MW-only geophysical products should also be used with caution at any date after September, 2007.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report (interim)For November 6, 2007

This is an interim AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  operations status report for Tuesday, November 6 (during week 287 of the Aqua mission).

This report is being issued because Aqua drag make up maneuver #31, originally scheduled for November 7, has been postponed. The probable new date is Friday, November 9, but that date is not definite. Naturally, no detailed timeline is available at this time.

AIRS remains healthy with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Except for channel 4, AMSU-A is also healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Both instruments continue in routine operations.

An AIRS guard test was performed on Friday, November 2. Here is the detailed timeline (UT):

306/19:27:00 AIRS Guard Test begins (AIRS in CHECKOUT mode)

306/19:54:00 AIRS put into OPERATE mode (Guard Test complete)

A telecon with the Earth Science Mission Operations (ESMO) project at GSFC was held today to discuss the degradation we are seeing in AMSU-A channel 4. The AIRS Project continues to study the potential impact on our Level 2 products. At the moment no effect is discernible, but if the channel continues to degrade some impact is inevitable. The Project is also studying a number of options involving the Level 2 science software which could mitigate the possible future loss of this channel. ESMO is looking into the contractual requirements for obtaining consulting help from NGES, the builders of AMSU-A.

311/21:38:00  Photocal Lamps Off (S/C night)

Aqua drag make up maneuver #31, which had been rescheduled from Wednesday November 7, ran successfully today. The AIRS instrument is now completely back in normal operating configuration (see the paragraph below just before "AIRS hardware state"). Here is the detailed timeline (UT):

313/14:42:00 AIRS Thruster Suspend sequence started

313/14:43:07 AIRS in Ready mode, DC Restores suspended, scanner parked

313/14:45:00 Slew out in yaw begins

313/14:54:10 Slew out complete (14.35 yaw angle)

313/15:35:00 Burn begins (duration 18.5 seconds)

      313/15:35:19 Burn complete

313/17:35:00 AIRS Thruster Resume sequence started

313/17:36:50 Scanner scanning, DC Restores resumed, AIRS in Operate mode

The AIRS Project continues to study the impact of the degradation of AMSU-A channel 4 on our science products. The Level 2 products have not been significantly impacted yet. But we believe the degradation of channel 4 is likely to continue, so some change to the Level 2 software needs to be made. Several options are under consideration for the short term, including:

a) (temporarily) switching to the already-in-place AIRS-only retrieval algorithm;

b) (could be implemented before the end of December) modifying the standard AIRS Level 2 software to either avoid the use of channel 4 or model channel 4's new behavior.

No final short-term option has been selected yet. In the meantime, the health of AMSU-A is being carefully weighed during the planning of Version 6 of the science software, scheduled for release in late 2008.

On Wednesday, November 7 a human error caused a spacecraft command to be sent earlier than it should have been. That command released for execution an AIRS command sequence which was not supposed to run. The net result was that, for several minutes starting at 17:45 UT, the AIRS scanner was not in scan mode even though the instrument mode was marked as "Operate" in the telemetry. This means that the automated AIRS science software would try to process the data and would produce erroneous results for several minutes. In addition, a periodic DC restore command was issued to run every 20 minutes, even though another such command was already running. The science software is not designed to handle multiple DC restores in a single granule. Fortunately, the radiances produced by the Level 1B software appear to be fine. Only some status and quality flags are improperly set. We chose to leave AIRS in this double DC restore state until today's drag make up maneuver, at which time the instrument was restored to its normal state.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For November 16, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Friday, November 16 (the end of week 288 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS remains healthy with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Except for channel 4, AMSU-A is also healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Both instruments continue in routine operations.

There were no instrument activities this past week.

The AIRS Project continues to study the impact of the degradation of AMSU-A channel 4 on our science products. Channel 4 performance is steadily getting worse. Level 2 products are beginning to be impacted. Because of this, we have requested that the GES DISC begin running the AIRS-only algorithm. For the time being, both the standard AIRS+AMSU PGE and the new AIRS-only PGE will run in parallel, and the output from both programs will be accessible to the public. In this way, users can determine which product works best for them.

In the meantime, work is proceeding on a modified AIRS+AMSU Level 2 PGE that takes into account the fact that channel 4 has degraded. Careful testing must be performed and complete documentation made available before the new software can be used at the GES DISC.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For November 30, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Friday, November 30 (the end of week 290 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS remains healthy with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Except for channel 4, AMSU-A is also healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Both instruments continue in routine operations.

MODIS lunar calibration roll maneuver #49 and an AIRS guard test took place on Tuesday, November 20. Here is the detailed timeline (UT):

324/19:15:00 AIRS Guard Test began (AIRS in CHECKOUT mode)

324/19:42:00 AIRS back in OPERATE mode

AMSU-A channel 4 continues to degrade. Although the standard AIRS Level 2 product (which uses combined AIRS and AMSU-A data) has been impacted somewhat, it is still good quality. If the degradation continues, the product quality will eventually become unacceptable unless something is done. The AIRS science team has approved for implementation a revised version 5 Level 2 PGE which will not use AMSU-A channel 4, but will use all other channels (except 7). The code changes are minimal. However, thorough testing and documentation are expected to take six to eight weeks. In the meantime, the GES DISC is running both the standard PGE and the AIRS-only version of the PGE, and making both products available to users. The root hardware cause of the anomaly is under investigation by Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems (NGES) in Azusa, California. NGES built AMSU-A.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For December 6, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Thursday, December 6 (almost the end of week 291 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS remains healthy with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Except for channel 4, AMSU-A is also healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Both instruments continue in routine operations.

Early this past Sunday (December 2) a combination of ground system problems and operator error at the EOS Operations Center caused corruption of the memory partition that holds the ground-based attitude determination (GBAD) data in the Aqua spacecraft's solid state recorder (SSR). About 19 hours of GBAD data were permanently lost because nothing was written to that partition for most of Sunday. Since late Sunday GBAD data have been being recorded on the SSR and downlinked as usual. But the data has format problems which have prevented it from being processed at EDOS. That means that all data from all Aqua instruments can be captured and stored, but at this time cannot be processed through Level 1 or beyond by most users because GBAD is required for geolocation. Direct broadcast users are not affected because they get the GBAD in the direct broadcast without it having to pass through the SSR. Affected users include NOAA, which gets AIRS and AMSU-A data directly from EDOS for use in weather forecasting, as well as the GES DISC which performs standard Level 1 and Level 2 processing of AIRS and AMSU-A data. The AIRS Project has requested the GES DISC to run its near-real-time process with a flag set to run Level 1 without storing valid latitudes and longitudes in the products. But the standard pipeline and all Level 2 processing are halted until further notice. Instrument housekeeping data is available and is processed at the EOC, so the instruments (and spacecraft) are not in danger. Processing of instrument housekeeping telemetry at the GES DISC is done in Level 1A, so the standard pipeline at the GES DISC is not processing engineering data.

The ESMO Project at GSFC is working with NGST (the builders of the spacecraft) to correct the problem, which is still on-going. Possible solutions are being discussed. Unfortunately, all options involve new procedures which will have to be developed and thoroughly tested. In the meantime, EDOS is working on a way to process the GBAD data that is coming down now, so that normal science data processing can resume while the SSR problem is being worked.

The ESMO Project is also investigating the possibility of reconstructing the lost GBAD data using other spacecraft telemetry and help from the Flight Dynamics Facility.

An AIRS photometric calibration sequence took place today. Here is the detailed timeline (UT):

    340/19:19:00  Photocal Lamp 1 On (S/C night)

340/19:27:00  Photocal Lamps Off (S/C night)

AMSU-A channel 4 continues to degrade. As of December 1, NeDT calculated by the AMSU-A Level 1B software had reached 2.2K. Engineers from Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems (NGES) (the builders of AMSU-A) came to JPL on December 5. We gave them two days of AMSU-A data, one from mid-2005 (when channel 4 was healthy) and one from recent days.  They will use the data in their investigation to find the root hardware cause of the anomaly.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For December 14, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Thursday, December 13 (the end of week 292 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS remains healthy with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Except for channel 4, AMSU-A is also healthy, with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Both instruments continue in routine operations.

The Aqua SSR anomaly described in last week's report is still present on board the spacecraft. However, the Aqua Flight Operations Team has an operational work around that permits the spacecraft attitude data to be downloaded to the ground in a format that EDOS can read. So, as far as the ground system is concerned, the anomaly no longer affects normal operations. All science processing, including near-real-time processing, resumed as of late Tuesday, December 11. Catch-up processing of data from late December 2 (when writing the attitude data to the SSR resumed) through December 11 is virtually complete as well. The Earth Science Mission Operations project (ESMO) at GSFC believes that even the lost attitude data (most of December 2) can eventually be regenerated from other sources, though at lower temporal resolution. In the meantime, work on fixing the original problem on Aqua has been temporarily suspended until more serious problems with the Aura spacecraft's FMU/SSR can be corrected. The Aura anomaly correction work is expected to continue into January 2008. Once it is completed, the Aqua problem will then be worked on and a permanent fix implemented.

AMSU-A channel 4 continues to degrade. As of December 12, NeDT calculated by the AMSU-A Level 1B software had reached 2.6K. Engineers from Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems (NGES) (the builders of AMSU-A) continue to investigate the root hardware cause of the anomaly. Within the AIRS Project, work is proceeding on an updated version of the Version 5 Level 2 PGE. The updated version will make no use of AMSU-A channel 4, but will use all other healthy channels. The GES DISC is still running the original Version 5 PGE and, in parallel, the AIRS-only Level 2 PGE.

Subject: AIRS Operations Status Report For December 27, 2007

This is the AIRS, AMSU-A, and HSB  weekly operations status report for Thursday, December 27 (almost the end of week 294 of the Aqua mission).

AIRS remains healthy with all voltages, currents, and temperatures as expected. Except for channel 4, AMSU-A is also healthy. Both instruments continue in routine operations.

The operational workaround developed by the Aqua Flight Operations Team is providing timely science and engineering data in spite of the problem with the Aqua solid state recorder.

AMSU-A channel 4 is still degrading. As of December 25, NeDT calculated by the AMSU-A Level 1B software was about 3.35K. Engineers from Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems (NGES) (the builders of AMSU-A) are investigating the root hardware cause of the anomaly.

The initial public announcement of this problem, first issued in late October, can be found at:

http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/AIRS/amsu_ch4_noise_increase.shtml

A more detailed announcement regarding the impact on Level 2 science products was issued on Friday, December 21 by Steve Friedman, Deputy AIRS Project Manager. It can be found on the GES DISC web site. To summarize, the yield of retrieval products from the operational version 5 AMSU+AIRS PGE is now significant, especially near the surface.
