Software
Software tools useful for browsing and/or extracting data
from the catalogs are included on both the ASCII and FITS versions of
Volume II and III and the ASCII version on the Volume IV. The latest
version of all the software tools is available via anonymous ftp
from Note
- The ASCII disc can be read using any editor that can import an ASCII
file.
- Volume I, the two-disc set containing 114 astronomical catalogs is
available on CD-ROM. The two-disc set contains one ASCII cd-rom and one FITS
cd-rom. All of the original catalogs contained on ADC CD-ROM,
Volume I are available via the Internet.
- Volume IV cannot be read by users of Windows 3.x and DOS 6.22 and earlier.
It will work for Windows 95, and on the other platforms. For more details on
the problem, see our Q & A on the Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume IV at
http://adc.gsfc.
nasa.gov/adc/cd4_explanation.html.
- Volume IV/Release 2 has been mastered to strict ISO 9660 level 1 standard.
Information
The ADC, Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume I, contains 114 of
the most often requested and scientifically useful astronomical catalogs
in the ADC archives, including the Astrographic Catalog Reference Stars
(Corbin & Urban, 1991), the IRAS Faint Source Catalog, Version 2.0
(IPAC 1990), and preliminary versions of the General Catalog of Trigonometric
Stellar Parallaxes (van Altena et al., 1991), the Catalog of Nearby Stars
(Gliese et al., 1991), and the Fifth Edition of the Bright Star Catalog
(Hoffliet and Warren, 1991).
Software is available from the ADC for browsing through the FITS-formatted
data sets. The FITS Table Browser can read standard FITS tables and
select fields to display by name, filter records by boolean comparisons of
field values, and extract selected fields into text files.
Computer-readable documentation is included with each catalog in the form of
printable ASCII text files and, for some catalogs, as LaTEX input files. In
preparation for the CD, all catalogs were inspected and certain fields,
such as object names and coordinates, have been reformatted for
more homogeneity between datasets. For instance, all Durchmusterung catalog
identifiers have been placed in a single uniform format. The FITS table
headers were constructed such that field identifiers and physical units
(TTYPE and TUNIT keywords, respectively) are consistent for all catalogs.
All of the original catalogs contained on ADC CD-ROM,
Volume I,
are available on an FTP server. The
CD-ROM contents
list provides links to the current version of each catalog. All reported
errors are contained in the
Volume I errata.
The ADC CD-ROM, Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume II, is the second
volume in a series of CD-ROMs that present a selection of astronomical
catalogs. The catalogs cover a variety of subjects and were selected
because they are large or frequently requested. For example, this CD-ROM
contains the large Durchmusterung catalogs that did not fit on Volume I as
well as some other large catalogs like the Hipparcos and Tycho catalogs.
There are two versions of this CD-ROM, one in ASCII (Volume II, No. 1) and
one in FITS (Volume II, No. 2).
All of the original catalogs contained on ADC CD-ROM,
Volume II, are available on an FTP server. The
CD-ROM contents
list provides links to the current version of each catalog. All reported
errors are contained in the
Volume II errata.
The ADC CD-ROM, Selected Astronomical Catalogs, Volume III and IV contain
a mix of catalogs which have been updated or corrected since Volumes I and
II and popular catalogs and journal tables not published on either of the
first two volumes. As with Volume II, there are two versions of Volume III,
one ASCII (Volume III, No. 1) and one in FITS (Volume III, No. 2). Only the
ASCII disc was produced for Volume IV and Volume IV/Release 2. Software is
being provided to allow users to create FITS table versions of the catalog
and journal tables.
All of the original catalogs contained on ADC CD-ROM,
Volume III and
Volume IV, are
available on an FTP server. The
CD-ROM contents
list provides links to the current version of each catalog. All reported
errors are contained in the
Volume III errata.
The documentation of the catalogs follows the standard adopted by the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/ADC and the Centre
de Donnees astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) in France. Each disk has a
simple layout with, at the highest level, separate directories for the
catalogs, software, and additional documentation. Each CD-ROM is formatted
according to the ISO 9660 standard, and the file names have been restricted
to eight characters with a three-character extension.
Please use your browser back button to return to the CD-ROM Catalog from the
links below. Otherwise any information you have entered will be lost.
