QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF SEA LEVEL DATA by the UH SEA LEVEL CENTER/NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC DATA CENTER JOINT ARCHIVE FOR SEA LEVEL updated: 15 Oct 2001 Station : St. John's-B Latitude: 47 34.0N Country : Canada Longitude: 052 42.0W JASL # : 276B Time Meridian: 053W (GMT-3.5 hr) GLOSS # : 223 Originator #: 00905 NODC #: 74057201 Contributor : Marine Environmental Data Service Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans S12082-200 Kent St. Ottawa, Ontario CANADA K1A-OE6 Originator : Dept. of Fisheries Atlantic Tidal Section BIO, P.O. Box 1006 Dartmouth, N.S. CANADA B2Y 4A2 Original Data: digital Instrmnt Type: bubbler gauge was installed which utilizes the tidal acquisition telemetry system Digitzd Intvl: 15 minutes Present Data : Hourly, daily, and monthly values obtained by: Hourly : three-point Hanning filter centered on the hour Daily : 119-point convolution filter (Bloomfield, 1976) centered on noon applied to the hourly data with respective periods of the 95, 50, and 5% amplitude points at 124.0, 60.2, and 40.2 hours Monthly: Simple average of all daily values; calculated if 7 or fewer days are missing Span of data : 01 Jun 1993 - 31 Dec 2000 Gaps > 1 mon : 30 Jan 2000 - 04 Mar 2000 Time Refernce: GMT (hours 00-23) Space-filler Flag :-9999 Units : millimeters Missing Data Flag : 9999 Existing : Yes Operational : Yes Sat. Trans. : Yes Distribution : 1993-2000 Refernce Levl: All heights have been referred to the station tide staff zero which is linked to fixed benchmarks. The primary benchmark is BM 76F27, a Geodetic Survey of Canada (GSC) tablet which is located horizontally in the SE foundation, 1.1m from south corner, 0.15m below brick siding of the St. John's Ministry of Transport depot building. Elevation 4.412m above CD. Comment : The hourly residuals show significant fluctuations within the tidal frequency band. It is most likely due to the inability of the tidal analysis to completely resolve the complex nature of the tides. Only extreme fluctuations are noted below. The series, St. John's-A (1961-5/1993) hourly data are relative to the local time zone (GMT-3.5 hours). After 5/31/1993, a new series, St. John's-B, is established relative to the same datum but with the time zone related to GMT, since 15-minute data were available for performing this time zone shift. Data for 30 Jan - 04 Mar 2000 appeared corrupted and were removed from the final archive.
