Value of Sound in Learning English

Phonics are essential to learn English; Ato Mellese

Public Affairs Office hosted its monthly American Club lecture at Eritro-German conference hall on December 27, 2007 on “Value of Sound in learning English,” by Mr. Mellese Woldesselassie, author of several books on English language pronunciation.

Mr. Mellese began his speech by describing the English language capability in Eritrea during the time of the British protectorate. At that time, he said, English was spoken with good pronunciation;  however, this deteriorated under the Ethiopian occupation and especially during the Derge regime.

Sound and phonetics are important in pronunciation of a language. He said we have to teach our children about phonetics from earliest childhood, and he encouraged access to internet and radio, so they can hear the sound of English.  Mr. Mellesse stressed the incredible power of sound, and he noted that, among artists, several Eritrean singers are more famous that writers.

Mr Mellese also said that HOME is the best school for the child to learn phonics and language. He particularly noted that mothers play a major role in guiding their children to learn language.

During this lively event, Mr. Mellese demonstrated several common Eritrean mistakes in English language pronunciation.  He also entertained numerous questions on phonics and pronunciation.  Many patrons indicated keen interest in follow-up sessions to practice more English pronunciation.

Persons interested in such sessions are asked to contact the American Center.
