When you connect to the NBII Metadata Clearinghouse you will be able to search through metadata-based descriptions of biological data sets and information products from many different sources to identify those that meet your particular search criteria.

Hawaii Biological Survey as an ongoing natural history inventory of
the Hawaiian archipelago. The project compiled and
computerized specimen information and completed compilation of published
information on 274 Hawaiian rare candidate insects which are in the
Bishop Museum databases and collections.
[The NBS is now the Biological Resources Division of USGS] and provides
a widely available database of information on Category 2 Candidate
insect species in Hawaii. Its primary purpose is to provide in
one place, available information on candidate species of arthropods in the
Hawaiian Islands. The information is of broad interest to researchers
ranging from systematists to ecologists and from reserve managers and
conservationists to planners and developers. This information can be
used by public and private land managers to develop conservation
actions, and by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make delisting
determinations.

accuracy as the data are based on actual voucher specimens residing in
the Museum collections. These specimens have had their identifications
verified by specialists resulting in quality information.
presented include the Curculionidae, or weevils.
All candidate species as listed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
are included in the checklist database. Since this database was
created, USF&WS placed all of the C2 species into a category
called "Species of Concern" but raised 26 arthropods to candidate status.
The candidates are also included in the checklist database. The specimen
database includes all specimens of the listed species that are
available in the Bishop Museum collections. In some cases,
no specimens representing the species were encountered and further
research would be necessary to determine whether the species is
represented only by types or if specimens are misplaced.
Some species that have not been seen since the original Fauna
Hawaiiensis collections by R.C.L. Perkins may be represented only in
the Natural History Museum (British Museum) collections as the majority of
the Fauna Hawaiiensis material was deposited in London. These specimens
are not included in the database.
In some groups, in order to provide a more robust picture of
the specimen data, all specimens representing all species in the group
have been databased (including non-candidates).
To provide a more robust picture of the specimen data, all
identified specimens in the genus-group include candidate species
that have been databased including non-candidates).. Portions of
the collection were on loan for revisionary work and these were not
databased pending the completion of the revision. One major
example of this are the carabid beetles on loan to Dr. James Liebherr
at Cornell. Upon their return (and publication of the revision),
the specimens are to be databased by the Bishop Museum. A few specimens in some
other groups are on loan to various researchers. The specifics of the
label data are to be entered into the specimen database upon the
return of the specimens.

accepted name of the taxon and its distribution by island. A CITATIONS
list is the result of extensive searches through the literature seeking
references to Hawaiian species and includes the original description and
attempts to cover the basic synonymy. The BIBLIOGRAPHY provides a more
complete citation for the Hawaiian references including the full title,
pagination and other pertinent publication information. Finally, the data
from SPECIMENS has been extracted from the Bishop Museum collections and
is provided in a very basic format.
