Waterfowl
Ring-necked
Duck
At
first, this duck could be mistaken for a scaup, but the
white ring near the bill tip and at the base of the male's bill help separate
this bird from the scaups. In addition, the upward-pointing white comma at the
front of the males gray/white vermiculated side feathers is a good distinguishing
field mark from a distance. This bird favors marshes and wooded ponds and swamps.
Very few Ring-necked ducks nest or winter in Alaska.
