Ir-GTH I and -GTH II, and ir-lamprey (1), -mammalian (m), -chicken II (cII), and -salmon (s) GnRH were localized in Xiphophorus from birth to adulthood. Ir-GTH I was found in the pituitary gland at all ages studied. Ir-GTH I was found in animals approaching puberty and older. Ir-sGnRH was found in the nucleus olfactoretinalis (NOR) of the brain and in the pars intermedia (PI) and caudal pars distalis (CPD) of the pituitary of immature animals; mature animals demonstrated a response in the nucleus preopticus periventricularis, nucleus lateralis tuberis and in the neurohypophysis, as well as in the NOR, PI, and CPD. Ir-mGnRH was restricted to the NOR of immature fish but had a similar distribution as sGnRH in adults. Ir-cIIGnRH was absent in immature animals; in adults its distribution was similar, but not identical, to sGnRH. Ir-1GnRH was intense in the PI at all ages and in the CPD and PI of adults. Our data suggest that variant forms of GTH and GnRH may regulate different stages of reproductive system development.
