From: Daniel Devine [danieldevine@yahoo.com] Sent: Thursday, August 24, 2006 10:59 AM To: Adjodha, Michael E Subject: Mercury Amalgam Fillings Mr. Adjodha, I am 41 years old and have followed a fairly healthy lifestyle. I am well educated and am a CPA and a Tax Attorney. I had 10 amalgam fillings placed in my mouth when I was about 10 to 12 years old. For most of my teenage and adult life, I have lived with digestive problems (certain foods used to run right through me) and with oily skin and bad breath and other bodily odors. I thought that these were just things that were peculiar to me and that they were things that I had to accept. Even though these things seemed to be getting worse, they did not seem to be life threatening or a sign of anything serious. Then about 7 years ago, one of my amalgam filled teeth broke. The dentist fixed the tooth by drilling out any remaining amalgam and fixed the tooth with a significant amount of amalgam filling. Soon after this, my digestive problems and other problems got worse. In addition, my blood pressure increased and I began to have chest pains and felt like I was going to have a heart attack. I went to a cardiologist who put me on blood pressure medication. The medication helped for a few years. Then about 2 years ago, my blood pressure and pulse, even though on blood pressure medication, periodically went out of control. I went to the hospital two times thinking that I was having a heart attack due to the extreme increase in blood pressure and pulse rate. Each time, I was told my EKG was fine and that there was no explanation I then developed a severe sinus infection and arthritis in my right wrist, shoulder and neck, the same side of my body that contained the new amalgam filling. I went to my general practitioner and to an ENT, neither could find anything wrong with me, but neither could they explain why I was so sick. In fact, the antibiotics that they gave me only made the sinus infection worse. In 2005, I went to a holistic medicine doctor. He tested my hair and urine for mercury levels. Each came back extremely high. I began to take natural supplements to remove the mercury from my body. My blood pressure, although still high, began to normalize and stopped spiking at high rates. In addition, my sinus infection began to improve and I was able to expel waste from my nose that had been there for over one year. Also, my digestive problems went completely away. As time goes by and I continue to take the supplements, my skin has cleared and the offensive odors from my body have decreased. Encouraged by the progress, I decided to have all 10 of my amalgam fillings removed in December of 2005 and January of 2006 by a mercury free dentist who utilized special precautions during removal. After removal, even though the dentist used special care, I initially felt worse and in fact, many of the things that originally had bothered me but I had eliminated came back. For instance, I started having the spikes in my blood pressure again. To me, this is direct causal evidence linking mercury to my health problems. It has now been 7 months since the removal of the 10 amalgams from my mouth. Although my health has improved significantly since removal, it has been an up and down battle and my body has become exhausted trying to remove the mercury and all the other toxins bound up in my body because of the mercury toxicity. My blood pressure is approaching a normal level, even without blood pressure medication and my sinus infection is improving. Right now, I am thankful that I am getting better. But I am also very angry that mercury containing amalgam is allowed to be placed in people's mouths and that the American Dental Association and the U.S. government continue to tell the American people that mercury amalgam is safe. I am direct evidence that it is not safe. I am sure that the problems I had while mercury was in my mouth, the permanent damage caused by the mercury in my system, and the stress on my body from removing the mercury from my body, have reduced my life expectancy. This was unnecessary. The only good that comes out of this is that I tell everyone I know not to get mercury fillings and I have made sure that my children do not get them. Mr. Adjodha, the problems caused by mercury fillings are not going to go away, they are only going to get worse. The legal liability associated with fixing this problem will not go away either. I suspect that the legal liability for all of the amalgam fillings currently in people's mouths is the reason why there hasn't been any change. The U.S. government needs to being protecting its citizens and ban mercury fillings. People are becoming more aware of this issue and the legal liability is only going to get bigger. The time for change is NOW. As soon as I get completely well, I plan to actively fight for the ban of amalgam fillings. Please do the right thing and support this issue. Please respond to me and inform my how the FDA is planning to address this issue. I would appreciate a response at your earliest convenience. Please call me at 248-512-3127 with any questions.
