Scope and Content Note

The papers of S. R. Shapiro (1911-1990) span the years 1895-1982, with the bulk of the material dating from 1950-1957. The papers are organized into the following series: Shapiro Correspondence, Bruce Rogers, Miscellany, Printed Matter, Oversize, and Restricted..

The first section comprises the correspondence received by Shapiro, primarily from clients. It also includes extensive correspondence from Bruce Rogers, as well as other notable Americans such as Rockwell Kent and Stanley Marcus, and correspondence from major libraries in the United States.

The Bruce Rogers series focuses on publications designed by Bruce Rogers, especially those from the 1950's, although it covers his entire career, including the Riverside Press period (1896-1912). There are drafts of Rogers's writings Pi and the unpublished E-pistoleary letter's to my co-respondents, as well as Rogers's correspondence to individuals other than Shapiro. It includes numerous lists of Rogers-designed items (including items previously unattributed to him), as well as preparatory materials and purchase orders for writings by Shapiro on Rogers.

Miscellany focuses on the business as well as personal activities of Shapiro. It principally includes financial records, purchase orders and tax forms for the period 1950-1952. It also includes materials on the writings of Shapiro that are not focused on Rogers. Some biographical information is also present.

Printed Matter includes auction, dealer, and publisher catalogs collected by Shapiro that list items designed by Rogers. Other periodicals contain articles both about Rogers and the books that he designed. This section also includes an assortment of prospectuses, primarily to Rogers's books, as well as miscellaneous ephemera.

Oversize includes printer's proofs to Modern Art, as well as miscellaneous slipcases to books designed by Bruce Rogers.

Restricted consists of realia belonging to Shapiro, such as the wood block used for his bookplate.
