(12/19/2007)5087 Highway 44 Freer, Texas 78357 Phone: (361) 698-5400 Fax: (361) 394-5690 History The Freer Border Patrol Station officially became operational on September 1, 1984, and was given the responsibility of over 6,157 square miles of terrain covering Duval, Jim Wells, Live Oak, McMullan, and Webb Counties. Freer, Texas is uniquely located in the heart of South Texas, with four vital North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Corridors intersecting its boundaries, U.S. Highway 281, U.S. Highway 59, State Highway 16, and State Highway 44. The Freer Station plays an integral part of the overall National Border Patrol Strategy as a secondary line of defense between the border of Mexico and the interior of the United States. Current operations at the Freer Station ensure that resources, manpower, and technology are deployed to maximize a deterrent posture at the permanent Freer Border Patrol Traffic Checkpoint, its primary responsibility. Its secondary responsibility is to conduct ranch and brush patrol operations. These two basic operations work simultaneously to deter illegal entries of aliens, narcotics, and possible terror suspects who may attempt to circumvent the foundation of its operation. The Freer Station also plays a significant role in deterring the furtherance of aliens and narcotics. As of September 11, 2001, the Border Patrol’s mission and responsibilities have extended to include the deterrence of terrorists and their weapons of mass effect from entering the United States. The level of vigilance performed by agents has increased, and a new sense of urgency has taken over their everyday duties as Border Patrol Agents. Area of Responsibility The station’s area of operation covers approximately 6,157 square miles which encompasses the counties of Duval, Jim Wells, Live Oak, McMullan, and part of Webb County. Freer, Texas is uniquely located in the heart of South Texas and there are three roadways that intersect the city; U.S. Highway 59, State Highway 16, and State Highway 44. The Freer Station is the secondary line of defense in the overall National Border Patrol Strategy. The station is also responsible for a traffic checkpoint. |
