To reach the tidal bench marks from the intersection of State Highway 35 and
State Highway 516, proceed on State Highway 516 to Keyport. The tide gage and
staff were 0.7 mile (1.1 km) NW along State Highway 35 from Keyport, at the Snug
Harbor Marine, Inc. The bench marks are along State Highway 35.

SETTING CLASSIFICATION: Concrete Bridge Column
The bench mark is in the top of the west and most southerly bridge column of the
concrete and steel drawbridge over Matawan Creek, at Middlesex - Monmouth county
line, 0.7 mile (1.1 km) NW along State Highway 35 from the highway overpass of
Central Railroad of New Jersey at Keyport, 38.8 feet (11.8 m) NW of the NW face
of the south abutment, 35.9 feet (10.9 m) SW of the SW corner of the most
southeasterly column under the bridge, 12.7 feet (3.9 m) north of the corner of
the west end of the wood bulkhead, set horiontally in the SE corner of the
concrete column and 3 feet (1 m) above the high water line.

The bench mark is set in the structure of the West Fourth Street overpass, 0.35
mile (0.56 km) NW along State Highway 35 from the highway overpass of Central
Railroad of New Jersey at Keyport, 59.5 feet (18.1 m) NW of a catch basin, 7.2
feet (2.2 m) NE of east curb, and 3.7 feet (1.1 m) SE of the NW edge of the
overpass of West Fourth Street, set vertically on the most northwesterly
concrete column on the east side of the highway and 3 feet (1 m) above the
ground.

The bench mark is at the small concrete bridge over Luppatatong Creek, 0.05 mile
(0.08 km) NW along State Highway 35 from the overpass of Central Railroad of New
Jersey at Keyport, 44.4 feet (13.5 m) SE of wood utility pole #JC 760KP (295W),
2.8 feet (0.9 m) NE of the NE curb, 2.5 feet (0.8 m) NE of the NW corner of the
wall of the bridge, set on top of the NE abutment of the bridge, and level with
the highway.

The bench mark is at the overpass of Central Railroad of New Jersey over State
Highway 35, 66.0 feet (20.1 m) north of a 24 inch manhole, 40.0 feet (12.2 m) NW
of the SE corner of the abutment, 6.3 feet (1.9 m) NE of the curb of the
northbound lanes, 2.5 feet (0.8 m) SE of the NW face of railroad bridge
overhead, set vertically in the face of the northeast abutment of the overpass
and 4 feet (1 m) above the level of the highway.

guard rail, set in the top of the west corner at the NW end of NE the pedestrian
walk of the bridge, and 1 foot (0.3m) above the level of the highway.

D E F I N I T I O N S
Mean Sea Level (MSL) is a tidal datum determined over a 19-year National Tidal
Datum Epoch. It pertains to local mean sea level and should not be confused
with the fixed datums of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88).
NGVD 29 is a fixed datum adopted as a national standard geodetic reference for
heights but is now considered superseded. NGVD 29 is sometimes referred to as
Sea Level Datum of 1929 or as Mean Sea Level on some early issues of Geological
Survey Topographic Quads. NGVD 29 was originally derived from a general
adjustment of the first-order leveling networks of the U.S. and Canada after
holding mean sea level observed at 26 long term tide stations as fixed.
Numerous local and wide-spread adjustments have been made since establishment in
1929. Bench mark elevations relative to NGVD 29 are available from the National
Geodetic Survey (NGS) data base via the World Wide Web at
National Geodetic Survey.
NAVD 88 is a fixed datum derived from a simultaneous, least squares, minimum
constraint adjustment of Canadian/Mexican/United States leveling observations.
Local mean sea level observed at Father Point/Rimouski, Canada was held fixed as
the single initial constraint. NAVD 88 replaces NGVD 29 as the national
standard geodetic reference for heights. Bench mark elevations relative to
NAVD 88 are available from NGS through the World Wide Web at
National Geodetic Survey.
NGVD 29 and NAVD 88 are fixed geodetic datums whose elevation relationships to
local MSL and other tidal datums may not be consistent from one location to
another.
The Vertical Mark Number (VM#) and PID# shown on the bench mark sheet are unique
identifiers for bench marks in the tidal and geodetic databases, respectively.
Each bench mark in either database has a single, unique VM# and/or PID# assigned.
Where both VM# and PID# are indicated, both tidal and geodetic elevations are
available for the bench mark listed.
The NAVD 88 elevation is shown on the Elevations of Tidal Datums Table Referred
to MLLW only when two or more of the bench marks listed have NAVD 88 elevations.
The NAVD 88 elevation relationship shown in the table is derived from an average
of several bench mark elevations relative to tide station datum. As a result of
this averaging, NAVD 88 bench mark elevations computed indirectly from the tidal
datums elevation table may differ slightly from NAVD 88 elevations listed for
each bench mark in the NGS database.
