Program:  Ecosystem & Fisheries Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (Eco-FOCI) - RACE
Date of Appointment:  Summer 2006
Location:  Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, Washington
Project Description:
Ichthyoplankton and juvenile fish samples are collected in the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea on research cruises of NOAA’s Ecosystem and Fisheries Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (Eco-FOCI) Program. These samples are sorted and identified by staff of the Plankton Sorting and Identification Center in Szczecin, Poland and housed in the reference and teaching collections of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC), Ichthyoplankton Laboratory. The intern will receive training and learn techniques used to identify ichthyoplankton and juvenile fish. Using a dissection microscope, the intern will check and verify identifications using the A Laboratory Guide to Early Life History Stages of Northeast Pacific Fishes (Matarese et al. 1989) and other publications.

The  intern will also use and test a web based interactive Ichthyoplankton Identification System (IIS). Updated identification data will be entered using the Polish Plankton Sorting Inventory (PPSI) data entry program and retrieved for analysis using the FOCI Ichthyoplankton Database. Assistance will also be provided with maintenance and upgrading of the historical ichthyoplankton archives and teaching collections. Student can design a special project describing larvae of a particular species of interest or from a particular season or ecosystem.

Note: A dissecting stereomicroscope and computer will be made available to the student.
Field Work Description:
Field work not required.
Skills Required:
Familiarity with the use of a dissecting microscope, taxonomic keys, and computer software applications including word processing, spread sheets, and internet browsers.
Benefits to Student:
Experience in a biological laboratory, ichthyoplankton and juvenile fish taxonomy, data entry and retrieval, testing and developing cutting edge internet technologies, collection management and maintenance.
