Merle Travis Birthday Tribute and Beef Stew Supper

An annual event which celebrates the achievements of a Muhlenberg County native son whose talent changed the face of contemporary popular music and to celebrate the indigenous thumb-picking style of guitar from which he drew inspiration. Travis'western Kentucky thumb-picking style transformed the role of the guitar from a support to a solo instrument. The ninth annual tribute to Travis, held at Central City, Kentucky, on November 27, 1999, served Travis' favorite meal of beef stew, corn bread, and peach or apple cobbler to approximately 180 people. A recipe for making 60 gallons of stew is included! Jam sessions, begun early in the day at the Drakesboro Fire Station, continued long into the night.
