A limited study was conducted on evaluating two new, heavy base, cutback asphalts developed by industry especially for soil stabilization. One of the materials is claimed to be specifically formulated for deep penetration. The study involved comparing the stabilizing capability of these materials with conventional cutback (MC-2 grade) asphalt and asphalt emulsion (SS-1 grade) using a sandy soil. Conclusions were -- 1/Generally, it was indicated that the two new, heavy base, liquid asphalts are superior to standard emulsified or cutback asphalt materials for stabilization purposes. For spray application where good penetration is essential, the one material specifically formulated for deep penetration is the better of the two special cutback asphalts. However, at 1.0 gsy application rate, the other special cutback asphalt (because of its higher asphalt solids content) showed somewhat better water-proofing capability when mixed into the soil. 2/With the asphaltic materials mixed into the soil using the quantity required for a 1.0 gsy application rate, tests of cylinders oven cured 140 degrees F for 28 days showed that the two special cutback asphalts produced compressive strengths more than twice that obtained with the MC-2 cutback asphalt and SS-1 asphalt emulsion. |
