Seismicity Report for Northern California, the Nation, and the World for the week of January 22 - 28, 1998 Stephen R. Walter U.S. Geological Survey 345 Middlefield Rd. MS-977, Menlo Park, CA 94025 NOTE: This is the last week that this report will be manually compiled and FAXXED to readers. Beginning next week a reasonable facsimile will be generated automatically and placed on our website where both graphics and text files can be viewed and downloaded. The main differences with the computer generated report are: 1) the USA and World sections will be discontinued; 2) the written interpretation presently provided for each section will be eliminated. Interpretation will be provided only for earthquakes larger than M3.5 or when special activity warrants. To access the Weekly Seismicity reports in future weeks, point your browser to: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/QUAKES/WEEKREPS/weekly.html To get information on USA and World seismicity, visit the website of the National Earthquake Information Center at: http://wwwneic.cr.usgs.gov/current_data.html San Francisco Bay Area During the seven-day period ending at midnight on Wednesday, January 28, 1998 the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park recorded 25 earthquakes of magnitude one (M1) and greater within the San Francisco Bay area shown in Figure 1. Four were as large as M2.0. This total compares to 19 earthquakes during the prior seven-day period (January 15 - 21), three of which were as large as M2. The week's largest earthquake in the area was a M2.9 event that occurred Sunday night along the central Calaveras fault about five miles northeast of Gilroy (#2/1). It followed over the next several days by a dozen aftershocks of M1 and larger, two of which were as large as M2.0. These events are located just a mile or so northwest of where a M5.0 event occurred in January, 1993. A M2.3 occurred last Thursday evening on the northern Hayward fault beneath eastern San Leandro (#1/1). t was followed on Saturday by a pair of M1 events in eastern Hayward. Northern & Central California A trio of M3 events occurred in the north state during the week. The first, a M3.3, occurred Sunday morning in the Klamath terrane about 16 miles southeast of McCloud (#2/2). It was preceded a half hour earlier by a M2.9 shock and followed the next day by a M2.5 aftershock. The second M3 shock occurred Sunday afternoon in the Coast Range, a M3.2 event that was located about 20 miles north of Lakeport (#1/2). The final M3 earthquake occurred Tuesday morning in the Geysers geothermal area, one of five earthquakes as large as M2.0 (#9/2). Other earthquakes of note in the north state included a pair of subduction zone earthquakes that occurred Monday morning, both located about 30 miles southeast of Eureka at depths of 19 and 23 km respectively (#4/2). Central California was quiet at the M2 level with the exception of a pair of M2 events on the creeping segment of the San Andreas ten miles northwest of the Pinnacles National Monument (#5/2). Activity in the Sierra Nevada range included a pair of M2's southeast of Quincy (#3/2), a M2.2 east of Markleeville (#7/2), a 2.2 35 miles southeast of Sequoia National Park (#6/2), and a M2.4 southeast of Lake Isabella (#8/2). Long Valley Caldera Activity in the caldera continued to decline with only 93 earthquakes as large as M1.5, compared to 116 events during the previous week. Only one M3 earthquake occurred during the week, compared to two during the previous week. This event occurred Saturday morning at the north end of the Hilton Creek fault and was followed by a pair of M2 aftershocks over the course of the day (#2/3). Otherwise minor activity continued in the same two areas that were active in November and late December: the area beneath Highway 395 near the airport and the area just east of Mammoth Lakes near the junction of Highway 395 and Mammoth highway. A third area south of Mammoth Lakes produced a trio of M2 events, the first activity of any size since a M3.8 occurred here on December 19. USA Seismicity (January 19 - 27) The National Earthquake Information Center reported several notable earthquakes in the lower 48 states, most in the Pacific Northwest. First was a M3.9 west of Kalispell, Montana that was felt in Libby, Marion, and Happy's Inn (#1/4). A minor M2.7 in central Washington may well have not been felt at all (#2/4). Most certainly not felt were a pair of M4 earthquakes along the Juan de Fuca Ridge west of the southern Washington Coast (#3/4) and a M4.3 on the Blanco fracture zone west of the central Oregon Coast (#4/4). The Planet Earth (January 19 - 27) No large or damaging earthquakes occurred on the planet during the past week. Moderate earthquakes of note included a M4.4 that was felt throughout eastern and southern Taiwan (#1/5) and a M5.0 in eastern Kazakhstan that was felt at Ust-Kamenogorsk (#3/5). Other quakes of note include a M5.5 west of Macquarie Island (#2/5), a M5.7 in the Fox Islands of the central Aleutian chain (#4/5), and a M5.7 in the Komandorsky Islands region (#5/5). Table 1.
