Sex-workers peer education in Zanzibar.

AIM: To develop an intervention programme among sex workers target group for AIDS prevention. OBJECTIVES: 1. To identify sex workers leader 2. To establish and initiate peer education programme. METHODS: Discussions to identify sex workers leaders through contact with hotels, bars and restaurant owners, and orientation programme on HIV/AIDS and STDs were done. RESULTS: 6 sex workers leaders were recognized. 5 days orientation programme was conducted to leaders who drew their peer education schedule. They took three months and contacted 105 sex workers through 36 sessions. They managed to develop two types of posters and a video film script. They also distribute many condoms for AIDS prevention. CONCLUSION: Peer education is important for sex workers. It plays major role for AIDS prevention especially for condom promotion.
