Time
Enough for Love by Robert
A. Heinlein. I’m also reading Terry
Pratchett’s The
Disc World Series which is great for general
hilarity and satire. One character is Death, and his dialogue
is written in all caps.
Recommends:
If you like science fiction peopled with fantastically bizarre
aliens, try Vernor
Vinge’s work, especially A Fire Upon the Deep and Deepness
in the Sky. |

Reading: |
I’m
reading a massive tome called The Tiger Story,
by Douglas L. Frederick, Jr., a self-published 76-page history
of the Tiger
tractor. Tiger tractors were small, 5-10 horsepower
tractors made in Keyser, West Virginia from 1949-1964. You get
the book by writing Frederick and sending him $16 – and if
you enclose an extra five bucks you get a Tiger sticker. I sent
him twenty bucks extra and got four stickers. I own one Tiger
tractor.
This month I’m going to New York to buy
another one-and-one-half Tigers from a man who can’t work
on his tractors anymore because his knees are made of metal. I’m
not into reading as much as doing.
Recommends:
I did recently read and enjoy The Singing Wilderness,
by Sigurd
Olsen. Also Kenny
Salwey's Tales of a River Rat: Adventures Along
the Wild Mississippi . The author made his living on the Mississippi
River, fishing, hunting, trapping etc. I’m thinking of reading
the story
of the whaler Essex next. |
Watching: |
I watch the History Channel.
My wife is a history teacher. We also watch Discovery
Channel. I did not watch Prince
at halftime in the Super Bowl. We switched to the Nature channel
and watched Underdogs,
a show about rehabilitating bloodhounds.
Recommends: My son and
I like to watch Saturday morning fishing shows – especially
the salt water shows. |
Listening: |
I listen
to everything except opera and rap. I like blues, especially
old blues. I don’t
much like modern country, but I do like Willie
Nelson and Johnny
Cash.
Recommends:
The Reggae Showcase, a Sunday program (2-5 pm) on WRIU,
the university’s radio station. |
