Detectives investigating the assassination of a top Protestant militant arrested six men Wednesday.

Jim Gray, a former commander of the outlawed Ulster Defense Association, Northern Ireland's largest outlawed group, was shot several times at close range outside his home Tuesday night in Protestant east Belfast. Other UDA commanders ousted Gray from his post in March.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland declined to give any details about Wednesday's arrests. Under British anti-terrorism laws, all six men could be held at the police's main interrogation center at Antrim, west of Belfast, for up to a week before being charged or released.
