Abstract

The International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA), established in 1960, unites people who support family-centered maternity care and believe in freedom of choice based on knowledge of alternatives. ICEA emphasizes education and preparation for childbearing and breastfeeding; increases public awareness of the current findings relating to childbearing; encourages individualized care with minimal medical intervention; and promotes development of safe, low-cost alternatives in childbirth, which recognize the rights and responsibilities of all involved.

Publications

Serial publications: International Journal of Childbirth Education, quarterly--includes current obstetrical and maternity care information, a sharing of ideas and techniques for childbirth educators, a forum for group administrative concerns and interests; ICEA Bookmarks, quarterly--catalog of specially selected books, pamphlets and teaching aids available from the ICEA BookCenter plus book reviews. Other publications and holdings include materials for the Childbirth Education Workshop; Teacher Certification Program; conventions; pamphlets and class handouts; position statements; and teaching aids, including posters and videos.
