05_25_04 Geospeakers Meeting Summary

Ann Gunderson rocked the meeting to order. Cynthia Ramseyer galvanized with a few quotes on vacation --

"A vacation is like love -- anticipated with pleasure, experienced with discomfort, and remembered with nostalgia" -- Anonymous

"If you want to visit Paris, the best time to go is August, when there aren't any French people there." -- Kenneth Stilling

"We hit the sunny beaches where we occupy ourselves keeping the sun off our skin, the saltwater off our bodies, and the sand out of our belongings" -- Erma Bombeck

In other news, the nominated new Geospeakers officers for 2004-5 are:

  • Sergeant at Arms : Gretchen Luepke Bynum and Cecilia Willer
  • Treasurer: Chris Gutmacher
  • Secretary: Carol Reiss
  • VP PR: Mitch Smith (not confirmed)
  • VP Membership: Neil Shapiro and Stephanie Ross
  • Education VP: Shane Detweiler
  • President: Ann Gunderson

Chris Gutmacher was the toastmaster. Cecilia Willer, the master evaluator, introduced Ann Gunderson as the timer, Stephanie Ross as the Ah Counter and Carol Reiss as the Wordmaster/Grammarian. The word of the day is 'vicissitude' - change or variation, fluctuation, ups and downs

Cynthia Ramseyer gave a very touching eulogy of her Aunt Anna Mae Hanks. It was filled with vivid details of her life experiences and also how we can all learn from her attention to life's beauty and gifts.

Gary Curtis led the table topics of 'vacations'. It was fun to hear and think about what we'd dress up as if we were in a contest to win a 2 week vacation to anywhere -- based on how you were dressed. Also, life-changing vacations, where is the ideal vacation, most unusual vacation and childhood experiences. The Most Interesting award went to Cynthia; the Most Humorous award went to Ann and the Most Eloquent award went to Carol.

Neil gave an outstanding evaluation of Cynthia's speech. He raised an excellent point of how hearing a eulogy of someone provides us so much detail on the person - similar to an icebreaker!

Cynthia gave the last word:
"It is more fun to talk with someone who does not use long, difficult words, but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?" -- A.A. Milne

Ann rocked the meeting to a close early and a few went out to join the ongoing 50-years-at-Menlo celebrations.

Next meeting is June 8th - you should have received the revised agenda from Chris.

Thanks for a great meeting.
