New Signs of Water on Mars Create Hope of Great Discovery

Stunning new data from the Mars Odyssey orbiter suggest that water may exist within about a meter (roughly three feet) of the planet's surface. If so, that water is probably in the form of ice, but could conceivably be liquid, at least for part of the year. The spacecraft's Gamma Ray Spectrometer instrument detects the presence of hydrogen just under the surface. Scientists assume that most of the hydrogen present is part of water molecules. (A water molecule consists of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen; hence its familiar formula, H2O.) The spacecraft, which arrived at Mars in October, was not even supposed to be collecting scientific data until it slows down into its final orbit next month. But scientists are already detecting far more hydrogen than they had anticipated.

The presence of liquid water would mean that there is a chance that microscopic life exists on Mars today. But even frozen water would be of tremendous importance to future Mars exploration—a potential source of drinking water that would make human missions to Mars far more feasible.
