| Summary: | Peter Gregus, of Miami, FL, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Chicago, IL, for acting as a middleman in a bribery scheme where approximately 100 unqualified drivers, many from Illinois, obtained commercial driver’s licenses in Florida. He was sentenced to 5 months in prison and 5 months of home confinement. In return for bribes, Gregus helped non-English-speaking immigrants in Illinois and other states cheat on their written and driving tests. Part of the scheme included an employee of 3S Trucking, Inc., a Florida truck-driving school and state-certified third-party testing facility, who received $400 for each applicant he fraudulently passed on the practical portion of the test. During testing, many applicants never got behind the wheel of a truck. Many of the unqualified CDL holders were then employed by Watkins Truck Line in Illinois, another participant in the scheme. This case is part of “Operation Safe Road,” an ongoing investigation involving OIG, the FBI, IRS Criminal Investigation Division, Postal Inspection Service, and Illinois State Police. |
