[HealthLiteracy 476] Re: Wednesday Question: Giving ThanksNancy Hansen sfallsliteracy at yahoo.comWed Nov 22 16:24:02 EST 2006
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Thank you, Julie, for the chance to share. Knowing that a lot of my folks are scrambling to get families ready to go away for the holiday, I wonder if that may be why so few have replied. But ... I am the director of a community-based literacy organization that serves adults in a 1-to-1 reading, writing and spelling program. I am thankful for the many instructional improvements that have been made in the field over the years that I've worked within the literacy family. I'm thankful for people in networks like this who raise questioningly social issues of the very needy population, which literacy providers serve, rather than shoving the issues "to the back burner", as the expression goes, and not trying to find solutions for them at all. [Issues include health literacy and voting privileges, to name two.] I am thankful for the opportunity to serve adults with low level literacy skills within a caring environment where nurturing exists. I am thankful for the warm smiles that have been shared this week as our learners wished me a happy Thanksgiving away from their learning environment and in another place with my own family -- good folks who have far less in so many cases than do I, yet wear the smile of gratefulness. Can't help but care about every single one of them. Can you guess? I do. Happy holidays everybody. Nancy Hansen, Exec. I am thankful for the times we have spent together to reach out to families and children who were in need of health insurance and could not afford it without either Medicaid or CHIP. I have met some of the most caring people that I have ever had the opportunity to know. And we have been able to share some wonderful times. I wish everyone a happy and blessed Thankgiving.
