Critical Issues in eHealth Research Conference
Meeting date: June 9-10, 2005
(NCI Contact: Audie A. Atienza)
http://www.scgcorp.com/ehealthconf2005/
The Internet, PDAs, CD- and DVD-roms, cell phones, wireless and other emerging technologies have created extraordinary new opportunities and challenges for conducting research and evaluations. Yet, the literature is changing so quickly that many interdisciplinary issues and consequences have not been adequately identified or discussed. This is especially true for consumer eHealth research, where there are emerging challenges in many areas including the ethics of online research, methodologic issues related to the conduct of online research, and the adequacy of current research designs. Recognizing this exciting but complex environment, the NIH is sponsoring a scientific conference to encourage discussion, debate and identification of issues related to the methodological aspects of eHealth research.

Diet and Communication Workshop: What can Communication Science Tell us About Promoting Optimal Dietary Behavior?
Meeting date: July 14-15, 2005
(NCI Contact: Amy L. Yaroch)
http://www.scgcorp.com/dietcomm2005/
Communication experts will help inform the area of nutrition in what has been learned/applied in other health behaviors (such as tobacco). Specific large topic areas to be addressed include media coverage, policy and nutrition; nutrition and special populations; and strategic campaigns applied to the area of nutrition.

Minority Investigators Workshop in Behavioral Research Methodology
Meeting date: April 2005
(NCI Contact: Audie A. Atienza)
The purpose of this meeting is to provide intensive training in behavioral research methodology to investigators from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups who have interests in health disparities and behavioral science research related to cancer prevention. Promising scientists with limited grant experience (i.e., no R01 grants) will be selected to participate in this meeting.

Developing Ratings Criteria to Evaluate State and Local Policies Related to Youth Obesity
Meeting date: February 9, 2005
(NCI Contact: Louise C. Mâsse)
HPRB has a contract with The MayaTech firm to develop a coding and rating system for youth obesity policies. The purpose of this meeting was to provide scientific expertise to the development of the rating scales that will be used to evaluate the policies at the State and Local levels.

Mixing Methodologies: Using Context and Metrics for Health Behavior Change
Meeting date: August 2004
(NCI Contact: Sabra Woolley)
http://www.scgcorp.com/methodology2004/overview.asp
The overall purpose of this meeting was to bring together researchers from different disciplines to discuss the conceptual and the practical issues relating to mixing methodologies drawn from different scientific traditions.

The Behavior Chance Consortium Working Group Meeting
Meeting dates: January and July 2004
(NCI Contact: Linda Nebeling)
http://www.scgcorp.com/bccnutrition2004/
The purpose of the BCC Working Group Meeting was to bring the project collaborators together to review status of the project, evaluate progress, report data, design additional analyses, problem solve issues, design publications, establish writing teams, and coordinate presentations at various national meetings.

Conference on Improving Health Outcomes Assessment Based on Modern Measurement Theory and Computerized Adaptive Testing
Meeting date: June 2004
(NCI Contact: Bryce Reeve & Louise C. Mâsse)
http://outcomes.cancer.gov/conference/irt/
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Drug Information Association (DIA) co-sponsored a conference, "Advances in Health Outcomes Measurement: Exploring the Current State and the Future of Item Response Theory, Item Banks, and Computer-Adaptive Testing." This conference focused on new, innovative techniques for patient-reported outcomes assessment based on item response theory (IRT) modeling as well as its application to behavioral sciences.

Developing a Framework for Evaluating Physical Activity Legislative Policies
Meeting date: April 2004
(NCI Contact: Louise C. Mâsse)
http://www.scgcorp.com/expert-panel04/index.asp
The purpose of this meeting was to provide clear directions and priorities for surveillance strategies for physical activity-related policies at the state level and to develop a framework for evaluating the impact of these policies on the environment and individual behavior.

5 A Day Research and Evaluation Subcommittee
Meeting date: January 2004
(NCI contacts: Amy L. Yaroch and Linda Nebeling)
Research representatives from various agencies (i.e., NCI, CDC, USDA, ACS, PBH, California Department of Health and Human Services) have conference calls and in person meetings to discuss research and evaluation activities related to the area of 5 a day and compile an on-going listing of activities for the National 5 a day steering committee partners. This in-person served to facilitate coordination across these agencies.

Capturing Physical Activity and Diet in Real-Time Meeting
Meeting date: January 2004
(NCI Contact: Audie A. Atienza)
http://dccps.cancer.gov/hprb/real-time-2004/
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the conceptual aspects and the practical application of "real-time" methodology and associated technology to physical activity and nutrition research. Accordingly, this conference brought together nationally recognized content experts in the fields of physical activity, nutrition, technology, and research methodology to discuss these issues.

The Science of Real-Time Data Capture: Self-Reports in Health Research
Meeting date: September 2003

http://dccps.cancer.gov/hprb/real-time/
The purpose of the Science of Real-Time Data Capture conference was to examine the state of the science of momentary data capture and its application to health and cancer research. The conference brought together leading researchers, scientists, and technology experts to discuss real-time data capture research (i.e., ecological momentary assessments [EMA]). Furthermore, it provided a conceptual framework for EMA, presented exemplars of EMA research, and conducted technical workshops. Research needs and recommend research priorities were discussed.
