Abstract:

National Wildlife Refuges are federal lands managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). The primary source for boundary information is the USFWS Realty program (status maps, legal surveys) and county records (deeds and legal surveys).

Purpose:

The intended application of the data is to serve as a spatial reference of refuge boundaries for other data layers in GIS and mapping applications. It is specifically not intended to be used as a land survey or representation of land for conveyance or tax purposes. The Realty Survey program in USFWS is developing cadastral information (boundary and acreage data) appropriate for legal purposes. It is expected that data created in this project will be replaced as better survey information is collected.

Data are available both in the UTM projection described herein, and in geographic coordinates.

Using ArcInfo, empty arc and point coverages were created and projected to the State Plane Coordinate System. Bearings and distances were entered using Parcel Editor (tolerances defaulted to system defaults). State Plane coordinate information was derived from National Geodetic Survey station Allen PID # kk1753 dated May 1996. Arc and polygon items were added and populated in ArcInfo. The coverage was then projected to Universal Transverse Mercator. The coverage may contain COGO attribute items (aat items ANGLE - TANGENT2). If so, please read the following: Since data in this coverage was originally entered in the State Plane Coordinate System, COGO attribute values represent the State Plane Coordinate Grid. For example, the item DISTANCE is in feet, not meters. I.e. projection from State Plane to UTM did not change these COGO attribute values.
