The latest outlook from the Climate Prediction Center for November  2005 over Central and South Central Texas is looking for the November Monthly Rainfall and Average Monthly Temperature to have Equal Chances of being Below Normal, Near Normal, or Above Normal.   A link to this outlook can be found at Go to Link with the 30 Day Outlook for November 2005.  A link to the legend for these forecasts can be found at Go to the Link with the legend for Outlooks.

As days continue to shorten, more extremes in temperature and precipitation type begin to show up in November.  November can be a very dry month, especially with frequent dry cold fronts, while in other years it can be a mostly cloudy and rainy.  Severe weather events have shown up also.  Precipitation types have varied from rain to snow. 

The heaviest snowfall of record for Austin so far, came in the Fall, on November 11, 1937, when 9.7 inches of snow was measured. This exceeded the record winter snow of record for Austin of 6.5 inches January 30, 1949.  In November 1996, a late November winter precipitation event affected the Texas Hill Country and adjacent parts of Central and South Central Texas.  Five years later another winter precipitation event came in late November 2001.  This event affected the Texas Hill Country and parts of Central and South Central Texas on November 28 to the predawn hours of November 29. A trace of snow was observed at Del Rio and Austin. In the northern part of Val Verde County, snowfall near 2 to near 6 inches was observed on November 28, 2001.

Some Novembers have brought not only rains and flooding, also severe weather events have appeared. Since Year 2000, 3 of the 5 wettest Novembers of Record have occurred at Austin, while 2 of the 5 wettest Novembers have occurred at San Antonio.  Del Rio has had 1 of its 5 wettest Novembers since 2000.  November 2004 ended up the wettest November of record for Austin Mabry, with 14.10 inches, San Antonio with 9.46 inches, and Del Rio, with 4.71 inches of rain. November 2004 was the 3rd wettest November of Record at Austin Bergstrom, with 9.91 inches of rain. The long history of Fall and Early Winter Monthly Rainfall from October to December shows months that have had between 10 and 20 inches of rain in the area. The wettest November at Austin Bergstrom was in November 1974, when 12.49 inches of rain fell. The 2nd wettest November was November of 2001 with 10.51 inches.

On November 15, 2001, a flood and severe weather event came to the area, with very heavy rains and severe weather in the Austin Area to San Antonio. Rainfall amounts on November 15, 2001 were as follows: Austin Bergstrom 8.68 inches; Austin Mabry 7.55 inches; and San Antonio 2.18 inches.

In November of 1974 a flood event came to parts of Central Texas and Austin on November 23rd. In this heavy rain event Austin picked up 4.62 inches on the 23rd, at Austin Mueller Airport,  and 0.47 inches on the 24th. Austin Bergstrom picked up 8.70 inches of rain November 23, 1974 and an additional 1.18 inches November 24, 1974.

Some of the wettest days of climate record for South Central Texas shows up in the Fall Season.  Of the 10 wettest days for Austin Mabry, 5 show up from September to November, and 6 show up from September to December, by considering the December 3 and 4, 1913 heavy rains.  At Austin Bergstrom 4 of the 10 wettest days show up from September to November.  For Del Rio 5 of the 10 wettest days of record show up in October.  The 11th and 12th wettest days for Del Rio show up in September.  By November and December, since 1905, there have been no daily rains at Del Rio in the top 12 wettest days.  Climatologically rainfall amounts decrease markedly at Del Rio beginning in November, and then increase again from late February to April.  For San Antonio 4 of the 10 wettest days of record show up from September to November.  If the heavy rains of December 19 and 20, 1991  are considered for San Antonio, then 5 of the 10 wettest days have come from September to December.   

On the other side of extremes, some Novembers have ended up with no rain. The driest Novembers for Austin was no rain in 1861, 1894, and 1897. From 1856 to 2004 10 Novembers in Austin have had less than a tenth of an inch of rain.  For Austin Bergstrom the driest November, from 1942 to 2004, was November 1970 with a Trace. The Austin City location, measured a Trace of rain in November 1970 at Austin Mueller Airport.  This was during the drought of 1970-1971. The driest November at Del Rio was no rain is November 1917, in the middle of another drought. From 1906 to 2004 18 Novembers in Del Rio have had less than a tenth of an inch of rain.  At San Antonio the driest November was no rain in November 1879. From 1871 to 2004, 9 Novembers in San Antonio have had less than a tenth of an inch of rain. 

During a dry period that lasted from late 1987 to early 1990, in early November of 1988 on the 4th, very warm conditions came to Central and South Central Texas, as warm and dry air swept across the area from the west..  November Record Highs were established with 96 at Del Rio and 94 at San Antonio.  Austin Mueller Airport and Austin Bergstrom had highs of 89 on November 4, 1988. The warmest November day at Austin was 91 at Austin Mueller Airport on November 10, 1947 and November 13, 1951.  At Austin Bergstrom the warmest November day was 90 on November 10, 1947, November 13, 1951 and November 8, 1989.  

Some of the coldest November lows area wide came in November 1886, 1911 and 1976. The November 1976 period was the coldest fall of record for Del Rio and San Antonio.  The coldest lows for Austin was 20 November 30, 1911 and November 29, 1976.  At Austin Bergstrom the coldest November low was 20 November 29 and 30, 1976.  At Del Rio the coldest November low was 17 November 21, 1906.  At San Antonio the coldest low in November was 21 on November 29, 1976.

Quick changes in temperature also have shown up in November.  In late November 1975 after a cold outbreak just before Thanksgiving, overnight lows warmed up quickly from Thanksgiving morning, November 27 to the Saturday after Thanksgiving on the 29th.  From November 27, 1975 to November 29, 1975, the lows warmed up at Austin Mueller Airport from 29 to 69; at Austin Bergstrom from 28 to 67; at Del Rio from 29 to 64; and at San Antonio from 25 to 70.  An example of when it turned cold after being unseasonably warm came in November of 1970.  After a warm day on Sunday, November 22nd before Thanksgiving, it turned much colder quickly in wake of a strong cold front.  From the afternoon high on Sunday, November 22 to the Tuesday low on November 24, 1970, the temperature fell from 82 to 27 at Austin Mueller Airport; from 81 to 28 at Austin Bergstrom; from 85 to 26 at Del Rio; and from 86 to 25 at San Antonio.
