You have a few options for syncing with the server. We recommend Option 3.

Option 1: Web only access

To use the Mobile Web version, simply visit https://zimbra.anl.gov on your iPhone, login using your e-mail address and Argonne Domain Password, and make sure Mobile is selected in the dropdown box below the login.

Option 2: Mail only via IMAP (iPhone 1.x software)

iPhone users can access the server via the standard IMAP/SMTP protocols. To configure for e-mail, if you sync your mail accounts with your iPhone and you use Mac OS X Mail, your settings will follow to the phone.

If not, simply go into the Mail settings on the iPhone and add a new account. Choose Other, select IMAP and fill in the information as follows:

  • Name is how your real name appears on the From line of mail you send.
  • Address is your e-mail address.
  • Description is the name that will show up in the list of accounts on the phone.
  • Under Incoming Mail Server
    • Host Name is zimbra.anl.gov.
    • User Name is your MCS username-mcs.
    • Password is your Argonne domain password.
  • Under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
    • Host Name is zimbra.anl.gov.
    • User Name is your MCS username-mcs.
    • Password is your Argonne domain password.

The iPhone is generally good about figuring out the right ports to use, but to be sure, after the account is saved, select it from the Accounts screen, scroll down, and choose Advanced. Then ensure that:

  • Use SSL is on for both incoming and outgoing.
  • Authentication is Password for both incoming and outgoing.
  • The ports are 993 for incoming and 587 for outgoing.

Option 3: Mail, Calendar, and/or Contacts Wirelessly via ActiveSync (iPhone 2.x software)

This is the most seamless integration with your data on the Zimbra server. But first, some caveats:

  • If you choose to sync Calendar or Contacts wirelessly, you will no longer be able to sync those with your computer via iTunes. However, any changes made on the Zimbra server will wirelessly and automatically show up on your phone.
  • You cannot set a "Real Name" for sending mail. If your mail normally shows up as being from John Doe <jdoe@mcs.anl.gov>, it will now only show up as being from jdoe@mcs.anl.gov.
  • Only your own calendars will sync with your iPhone. Calendars others have shared with you will not show up on the iPhone.
  • All your own calendars will sync with your iPhone, each with its own color. You cannot choose which calendars show up.
  • Any contact and calendar info on your phone is erased and replaced with what's on the server. Make sure you've backed up by syncing with iTunes.

These come with benefits.

  • Changes on the server show up immediately on your iPhone.
  • Mail received on the server shows up immediately.
  • Appointments added on your iPhone immediately show up on the server.
  • The only time you need to attach your iPhone to your computer is to transfer iTunes content.

Now, the steps. To begin, in Settings, under Mail, Contacts, and Calendars, choose New Account.

** If your domain password contains a semicolon or backslash, we've found this step will constantly fail. You'll need to set a new password.
