Impact of various interventions on AIDS awareness in Chandigarh, India.

Objectives: Department of Community Medicine in collaboration with State AIDS Control Society, UT Chandigarh have startred a number of intervention programmes aimed at different groups of target population in order to assess impavt of various AIDS related interventions to prevent and control the diseaseMethodology A trained team made HIV/AIDS Training for doctors and technicians, School AIDS programme covered schools, Condom Promotion programme for slumdwellers. The activities are being iplemented for last two years. Results: Eleven training programmes (under NACO guidelines ) were organized in Chandigarh and about 350 doctors and laboratory technicians and paramedical professional were trained on HIV/AIDS. This has resulted in enhancement of knowledge and capacity building to fight the disease. Drugs are available in all big hospitals for post-exposure prophylaxis. This is an ongoing activity in Govt Medical College. Under School AIDS Education Programme, nearly 100 schools are being involved and four workshops for teachers and peer educators have being organized. The programme is based on life skill development. Initial hesitation to talk about sex education has been converted to enthusiasm and transformation of knowledge. Adolescents were found to highly motivated to spread the message of safe sex among their friends. Condom Promotion & IEC activities for the slum dwellers has also been initiated. Youths and males in active sex life are being educated about AIDS and correct technique to use condom. The condoms are bei ng placed regularly at the identified spots near to their dwellings free of cost. The condom use has increased from 31.7% to 60% in the target population. Youths are also being informed about masturbation and abstinence- the sure ways to prevent HIV. Conclusion: Community based educational programmes and capacity building interventions have resulted in making a good progress in creating HIV awareness in Chandigarh, India.
