Internet for English Teaching
Preface
In around the mid-1990's, when we first started integrating the Internet into our instruction and research, the Internet was just being introduced into many countries around the world. Today, the Internet is truly a global phenomenon, with more than half a billion users around the world, only one-third of whom are in North America . And indeed, Internet use is growing fastest outside the United States and Europe, in countries such as China, Brazil, and Egypt .

It is thus extremely timely that the Office of English Language Programs of the U.S. Department of State is now republishing our book, Internet for English Teaching. Pedagogical use of the Internet, like the Internet itself, is now a global phenomenon, bringing together students and teachers from around the world. We hope that the republication and worldwide distribution of this book will help bring together, and give voice to, the many talented teachers around the world who are using the Internet in the English classroom. Indeed, we have tried our best to highlight positive examples and models by many teachers throughout the world.

Whether you consider yourself a beginner, intermediate, or advanced user of the Internet for teaching, we hope you will find something of value in this book. We also hope that you will get in contact with us and share your own ideas about the use of the Internet in the classroom. Working together we can promote and share a vision of using technology and English in the service of cross-cultural understanding and human development.

CONNECT WITH ENGLISH
50 episodes, Each 15 minutes long.

This series was produced in 1998 by WGBH Boston. It is an Annenberg/CPB program\

Program description: CONNECT WITH ENGLISH was produced for students learning English, who are at the high beginning through low and high intermediate.

Each episode comes in two parts. The first part is a continuing story about Rebecca, an aspiring singer on a journey across America. Each episode touches on life's important issues: leaving home, parenting, education, work, love, success, and loss.

In the second part of each episode we meet real-life immigrants and students who discuss the similarities between Rebecca's experiences and their own.

Story -

The story begins as we meet Rebecca Casey, a 28-year-old Boston working woman, who dreams of becoming a singer. We also meet her boyfriend Matt who doesn't think much of her dream, and her 17-year-old brother, Kevin, who doesn't think much about the future at all. Rebecca's considers applying for music school and pursuing her career full- time, rather than holding down a factory job and doing her music on the side.

A full story line can be found at Annenberg's web address:
http://www.learner.org/resources/series71.html#program_descriptions

Style of speaking is helpful for learning English:

a. All of the characters use meaningful, natural language that students can put to work immediately in their own lives.
b. Each episode features dialogue that is slightly slowed down and subtly simplified. Key lines are repeated, idioms paraphrased, and important events retold. There are constant visual clues to meaning, such as written signs, notes, and documents.
c. Facial expressions, gestures, and body language also reveal meaning for students. Closed captioning can be used as a teaching and literacy resource.

Teaching Jazz Chants to Young Learners

The Instructor's Manual guides the teacher trainer in presenting the video, and encourages teachers to write their own jazz chants that relate to the needs and interests of their own students. Though particularly applicable to children, the technique can be used with all ages of English language learners. All teachers of English will benefit from the video's very practical and realistic approach.
