Woodinville High School victorious in largest
Regional Science Bowl

PORTLAND, Ore. - Six students from Woodinville, Wash. outwitted and outlasted the competition in the Bonneville Power Administration's Regional Science bowl on Saturday, March 9 at the University of Portland. The team went undefeated into the final rounds and beat out Ashland 62 to 34 in the championship match. Both the first and second place teams will compete in the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. sponsored by the Department of Energy later this spring. The winning teams were the northernmost and southernmost entries in the regional competition.

Lead by coach Larry Gulberg, the Woodinville A team-Nels Berg, Bryan Cattle, Brian Ritchie, Katie Rivard, and Zack Spencer-cheered each other on through sixteen rounds of quiz-style questions from physics, math, geology, and technology. Concentration and teamwork contributed to success as much as knowledge. Confidence, a quick buzzer-finger, and a willingness to make an educated guess didn't hurt either.

The Woodinville first place team will be joined in Washington, D.C. by Ashland High School's Mariah Mayfield, Brady Rigby, Ethan Townsend, and Damon Vanderlind, and coach, Kate Kennedy.

64 teams and over 300 students from Oregon and Washington high schools competed in the round robin tournament that began early Saturday morning. By lunch, only 16 teams remained in the running. The top four schools, Woodinville, Ashland, Kentridge, and Grant High Schools took home trophies to put in their school's display cases beside the sports prizes.

The Bonneville Power Administration sponsors the annual science bowl to encourage excellence among students of math, technology, and science.
